Mission Statement

Hyundai Hope On Wheels helps kids fight cancer by funding pediatric cancer research at children’s hospitals in the U.S. Every 36 minutes, a child is diagnosed with pediatric cancer in the U.S. – which represents 15,000 new cases a year. While cure rates of the most common forms of childhood cancer approach 80%, one in five kids diagnosed won’t survive the disease. Pediatric cancer is the leading disease related cause of death for children in the U.S. More than two-thirds of survivors will have side effects and are risk for secondary cancers. No kid should ever have to fight cancer. Our goal is to fund research at Children's Oncology Group institutions to increase cure and to improve care for children diagnosed with pediatric cancer. We dream of a world where no child ever again has to hear the words, "you have cancer." That will be a day to celebrate! Join us in our effort to #EndChildhoodCancer and follow us on social media. You can view videos of brave cancer survivors and learn more.

About This Cause

Hyundai Hope On Wheels is a 501c3 non-profit organization operating in the U.S. The mission of the organization is to increase cure rates, to improve the standards of care, and to create awareness about pediatric cancer. The program was begun in 1998 in the Boston, MA area by Hyundai Motor America and a group of New England area dealers, as an effort to help raise funds for pediatric cancer research. The program quickly spread nationwide, and today is among the largest private foundations funding pediatric cancer research in the US. Since inception in 1998, the Hope On Wheels has awarded over $100 million in pediatric cancer research grants. Each year, we award grants to Children's Oncology Group Member Institutions. The funded doctor grant winner is named a Hyundai Scholars, whose work has been peer-reviewed and chosen from a highly competitive grants review process. Pediatric cancer research projects funded by Hyundai Hope On Wheels are chosen by a committee of leading pediatric oncologist researchers. Awards support research studies which range from young investigators, patient care programs, translational research, to innovative therapies. This year, we have included a new grant called the Hyundai Quantum, which is a $1 million award, targeting the most high risk pediatric cancers. Four Hyundai Quantum Awards winners will be announced in December, 2015, each of which will be awarded a four-year grant. The Hyundai Cancer Institute located at the Children's Hospital of Orange County is the largest research study funded by Hope On Wheels to date. This $10 million 5-year study aims to find improve treatment options for kids diagnosed with high risk cancers using genomics and personalized medicine. During a time when children should be growing, playing and learning, far too many kids – 44 per day – learn they have cancer. These kids have hopes, dreams and potential. Our goal is to help find a day when no child ever has to die from pediatric cancer again. Supporters can visit www.HyundaiHopeOnWheels.org or follow us on social media to learn more about the program.
