Mission Statement
Indy SurviveOars, through the sport of dragon boat racing, offers hope, inspiration, and camaraderie to breast cancer survivors while focusing on health and physical activity.
About This Cause
An emerging body of research suggests physical activity not only has a positive effect on quality of life following a diagnosis of cancer, but it may also improve survival. Since 1996, hundreds of breast cancer survivors across the world have formed dragon boat teams and are paddling and racing regularly, promoting good health and fun. Indy SurviveOars is a group of dedicated breast cancer survivors and others committed to the cause of breast cancer who have introduced dragon boat racing to Indiana. The breast cancer survivors train to paddle together, support each other, learn from one another and overcome fear. All breast cancer survivors are welcome year round and do not need to be an “athlete” to participate. Survivors may choose to paddle at practices up to three times per week, and there are 4-5 opportunities per season to attend races, both inside and outside of the Indianapolis area. The boats are in the water from April until October each year, but social events and fitness opportunities are held throughout the year to support survivors.
