Mission Statement

MOMA’S house became a non-profit in Phoenix, AZ in July, 2007 seeking to help adult female victims of abuse gain autonomy and self-sufficiency. We provide transitional living and restorative services for up to 1 year to survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking MOMA’S house is a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to transform female survivors of abuse into self-sufficient women in a safe home environment that promotes healing and wholeness.

About This Cause

On June 1, 2009, we opened our safe house in Phoenix, AZ to provide domestic violence victims with a safe, secure, warm-loving environment in which to recover from the trauma of abuse and to provide the services that empower the survivors to reconstruct their lives with the goal of achieving independent living status. Though our target population is 18 – 25, we have and will continue to serve older victims of abuse, as well as maintaining a policy of non-discrimination. In June 2010 we were approached by the Phoenix Vice Squad and again in January 2011 by the FBI to assist with victims of human sex trafficking. Research into the human trafficking problem disclosed the same gap in services for adult female human trafficking victims that exist for domestic violence victims and we began assisting those victims, as well as victims of human labor trafficking. Additionally, while there are numerous government and university reports and studies asserting that most prostituted females are coerced or forced into the sex trade as young as 12 and continue working in the sex industry as adults, there are few services available to the substantial number of victims who are not rescued until after they reach adulthood, with most resources dedicated to helping minor victims. Though assisting child victims is imperative, we understand that it is just as important to aid the adult female victims and provide them the much needed opportunity to develop marketable educational, personal and interpersonal job skills. We are one of only 2 organizations in the Greater Phoenix Area dedicated to providing services and transitional housing to adult female victims of sex trafficking and the only one, thus far, to specifically address the needs of labor trafficking victims. Our program Aspirations, Mentoring, Outreach and Motivation (AMOM) consists of: - Housing for up to one year in a safe, secure, clean, healthy drug, violence, and alcohol free environment in which to recover and restore - Single occupancy bedrooms, full kitchen access and privileges, and on-site laundry, exercise room and computer lab with supervised internet access - On-site, intensive case management - GED/educational tutors - Life skills classes, workshops and seminars - Outreach through community service - REACH – A 5-week self-directed, inside-out development program. The course focuses on promoting personal leadership, healthy attitudes and behaviors along with the skill sets employers identify as essential Our program is designed to be completed in 90 days, but no more than 120 days. After completing the program residents are required to seek employment. The MOMA’s house program gives residents the opportunity to concentrate on creating the life they want to live and becoming totally self-sufficient. Residents reconstruct their lives by: • Refocusing their energy into identifying their personal goals. • AA or NA group meetings (if applicable) • Attending Prostitution Anonymous sessions (if sex trafficking survivor) • Working with the Resident Advisor to ensure that the logistic needs of daily living are provided (food, medical, counseling, education, etc.) by determining and obtaining the resources needed, thereby creating stability and structure in their lives • Participating in the Individual Development Plan (IDP) process to create a plan for their success • Participating in scheduled life skills workshops and class • Participating in REACH (leadership/ self-esteem building) and job readiness courses Our program goals are: • Ensure that all human trafficking and domestic violence victims receive restorative service that meets the needs of each individual • Enhance community capacity to identify and report trafficking crimes by conducting local and/or national training, public awareness and outreach activities • Support victims as they transition to self-sufficient survivor • Assist victims in reaching their identified individual goals • Work with law enforcement and community organizations to actively pursue innovative measures to end abuse against women Our program service objectives are: • Participation for victims in AA/NA/PA support group sessions in cases were prostitution and/or substance abuse has been identified • 100% participation for all residents in workshops and seminars, as well as the REACH leadership/self-esteem training course • 100% participation for all clients in secondary and/or higher education opportunities, life skill classes and all other services identified by the program administrator • Increase in the victim’s awareness of their own self worth Our program address the need of the estimated 43% of sex trafficking victims are coerced or forced to work the sex and /or labor trade as young as 12 years old and are not rescued until they are 18 or older. It also serves domestic violence and labor trafficking victims age 18 and older. Due to the nature of human trafficking and domestic violence, it is difficult to quantitatively identify the number of people impacted. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence cites: Domestic violence invades the public and private lives of women, men, and children, impacting families, friends, co-workers, and communities. Domestic violence crosses all socioeconomic and cultural boundaries. The 35 domestic violence and human trafficking victims we have served suffered from the emotional, psychological and physical impact of their abuse. Our findings were that most services, shelters and transitional living facilities dedicate their resources to aiding single parent, low income families and child victims of abuse and / or human trafficking. We address this gap in services by providing housing and services to adult females without custodial children. Implementation Plan Our program builds self-esteem and empowers women to control their own destiny. During the first 6-weeks of our program the following resident’s needs are addressed: - Safe housing - Food assistance - Support groups - Medical /dental - Counseling - Life skills classes - GED or job skills training enrollment - Personal development by completing our in-house REACH (leadership skills/self-esteem building training course) The second 6-week segment of our program is devoted to job readiness skills, such as resume writing, job interview skills, time management, professional dress, hair and make-up workshops and much more. Depending upon the individual situation, our residents are ready to begin searching for jobs that suit their career within 90 to 120 days after entering our program. Program Distinctions Unlike other programs that serve the same population, our Safe House provides single occupancy bedrooms in a warm, loving home environment. We found that having a beautifully decorated bedroom of their own, many for the first time in their lives, has an immediate impact on building a woman’s self-esteem and establishing her sense of self-worth. We are also recognized as being distinctive for our individualized development plan. Each woman establishes her own personal, professional and educational goals, and works with a resident adviser and mentor to form a plan for reaching and surpassing her goals. Additionally, we are currently the only program offering an in-house leadership development plan. Evaluation Plans Our current program evaluation plan objectives are as follows: Objective 1: Increase number of high-quality and timely comprehensive services Performance Measure: Total Number and Types of services provided (by category) Objective 2: 100% Participation in REACH leadership/self-esteem building course Performance Measure: Number of residents enrolled / completed REACH ÷ Total number of residents Objective 3: 100% Participation in life skills classes and workshops Performance Measure: Number of residents in each session ÷ Total # of residents Objective 4: 80% of residents completing 90- day program Performance Measure: Number of residents completing 90 day program ÷ Total number of residents Objective 5: 80% of residents placed in jobs Performance Measure: Number of residents placed in jobs ÷ Total number of residents completing program
