Mission Statement
To promote safe, strong, and healthy environments for children and families through equitable access to child abuse prevention, education, and resource support.
About This Cause
Since 1989, the Tree House has evolved from an advisory board focused on changing local child abuse laws and developing protocols to better serve Walworth County community needs to a stand-alone nonprofit that now serves as a leader, partner, and resource in addressing child abuse prevention needs. In 2013, we held a grand opening for a stand-alone facility that was designed to bring professional services providers together in a non-threatening, compassionate environment to discuss abuse allegations with children and families of all races and economic status. Within our facility, Children’s Wisconsin Walworth County Child Advocacy Center (CAC) and Child and Family Counseling (CFC) rents space to provide services and healing to children and families of all races and economic status who have experienced a child abuse allegation. Complete with therapeutic playgrounds, healing gardens, and self-care spaces, the Tree House looks like a home because it was designed to create a sense of safety and security for children and their families. Today, it is the mission of the Tree House to promote safe, strong, and healthy environments for children and families through equitable access to child abuse prevention, education, and resource support. The Tree House annually reaches 7,000+ parents and primary caregivers, children, educators, and professional service providers throughout Walworth County (Wisconsin) and surrounding areas with upstream information and programs to prevent, recognize, and respond appropriately to all types of abuse. Our current programs, resources, and support include: • Stand-alone and recurring programs/workshops to support and strengthen primary caregivers—from expectant persons to grandparents to non-biological • Referral-based family assistance such as housing, transportation, food, clothing, school supplies, hygiene/household items, birthday/holiday support, healing from trauma, and bilingual Self-Harm Safety Guidance Kits • Bilingual community resources such as the Walworth County Child and Family Resource Directory and Theresa Stalzer Little Library • Child safety education for grades PreK-5 in Walworth County and bilingual child safety materials • Child maltreatment professional development for youth-serving organizations • Coordination of trainings, protocol, and case review for the Walworth County Sensitive Crimes Team The Tree House's goals are: 1) to provide accessible supports to children and families through Walworth County that stop actions or behaviors related to child maltreatment from occurring, 2) to support a model community response to allegations of abuse, 3) to understand needs and identify gaps in service for children and families affected by child maltreatment, and 4) to be a vital, county-wide child abuse prevention and education resource. The Tree House’s impact is made possible by contributions from individual donors and foundations, as well as through funds raised at our two annual special events, which include an annual Blue Ribbon Dinner & Bingo event in the winter and An Evening at the Derby in May. The Tree House is also fortunate to be the beneficiary of other community special events. At present, the Tree House has three full-time staff members and two part-time staff members. The Tree House is also fortunate to enjoy the support of 35 Walworth County community and business leaders who serve as members of our Board of Directors and/or active volunteers. From law enforcement to educators to behavioral health specialists to business owners to entrepreneurs—many of whom are themselves parents and grandparents—it is their experience, expertise, insight, and passion for our community that helps guide the Tree House’s mission to ensure we truly are serving the needs of Walworth County children and families.
