Mission Statement
AutismOklahoma is a non-profit organization that believes that every person with autism is unique and important. Our organization helps individuals with autism reach their full potential, helps families thrive, and help communities understand and embrace differences.
About This Cause
AutismOklahoma began as a parent support group in Edmond in 2002. Beginning with just 2 families, meeting on the 2nd Monday of every month at the Edmond Public Library, the group quickly to over 50 families. By 2007, the Edmond group had grown to the point of engaging with more than 350 families. Parents would drive across the state to attend the support group in Edmond and there was an obvious need for groups in other parts of Oklahoma. In 2007, we applied for and received 501c3 non profit status. Our organization, Oklahoma Family Center for Autism, Inc. continued to grow by offering more parent support groups (13 today), programs for individuals with autism, and by offering the PieceWalk for autism awareness. In 2009, Oklahoma Family Center for Autism, Inc. began operating under our current name, AutismOklahoma.org. We have remained true to our 3-prong goal of helping individuals with autism reach their full potential, helping families thrive, and helping communities understand and embrace differences. Today, AutismOklahoma engages with over 5,000 families affected by autism in Oklahoma. We mange over 700 volunteers annually, and provide over 85 programs. AutismOklahoma has grown from 1 parent support group to groups in 10 locations. Our camps, social clubs, pre-employment clubs, and recreational activities serve over 300 children, teens, and young adults with autism annually. Our model programs such as the Swanky Art Show, Bee's Knee's Art Program, Invisible Layers Productions and the "Even in Death" short film projects have received regional and national attention for innovation and creativity. The PieceWalk and 5K has grown to become the single largest event for autism in the state of Oklahoma and was attended by more than 8,000 people last year. We believe we have done a good job in leveraging the dollars donated to AutismOklahoma by involving families, engaging community volunteers, developing, growing and expanding programs in interest areas, and helping our community understand the unique and amazing qualities of someone who has autism.
