Mission Statement
Mid-Valley Prelude Sinfonia (dba Albany Youth Orchestra) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth orchestra program in Albany, Oregon. We provide classes to children in grades 3-12 to learn to play the violin, viola, cello, or bass in a group setting. Orchestra classes are no longer offered as part of the Albany public schools curriculum so our program fills that gap. Our beginner and intermediate classes are held before or after school in 4 elementary schools and one middle school. We also have two advanced youth orchestra ensembles that meet one evening a week at another middle school. Our goal is to provide affordable and accessible strings instruction to local youth. Our total class enrollment in 2021 is 151, with 66 of them receiving scholarship assistance. We also provide free and low-cost rental instruments to our students. We started operating as Albany Youth Orchestra in 2021 to increase our community identity and retained Mid-Valley Prelude Sinfonia as our registered business name.
About This Cause
Mid-Valley Prelude Sinfonia (now Albany Youth Orchestra) has provided string orchestra (violin, viola, cello, bass) classes to youth in the Albany public schools since 2007. From a beginning class of 10 students, we have grown our program to over 170 students at five levels in several schools. We provided online classes during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021 and have returned to in-person instruction. As we recover from the pandemic losses, our goal is to use what we have learned to continue building our program. Through the generosity of a local business owner, in 2021 we secured an affordable location to house our program operations and instruments and to hold classes and private lessons. We are developing partnerships with the local schools and community college to expand music education at all levels within the community. Our greatest need right now is twofold: to support our underprivileged families and students by increasing scholarship assistance, and to support our organization by building capacity to grow our programs. We need to invest in more robust program management applications and the training for them; we need to build a fully bilingual website; we need to provide our instructors with professional development opportunities so they remain current with national, state and local trends in music and orchestra education; we need to provide diversity, equity, and inclusion training for all of our board and staff; we need to expand our rental fleet to ensure that our growing student body has access to quality instruments; and we need to upgrade instructional areas in our new space with soundproofing, lighting, and air conditioning so they are comfortable and welcoming.
