Mission Statement
Writopia Lab is a national community of young writers, ages 6 to 18. Founded in New York City in 2007, Writopia Lab has now spread to Greater New York, Greater Washington, D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles.
About This Cause
Writopia Lab is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in New York City in April of 2007. We run creative writing workshops for kids ages 6 to 18. All of our workshops have a maximum of seven students and are led by a published author or produced playwright who has been fully trained in our time-tested methodology. In each of the past six years, our students have won more recognition for their writing than any other group of students in the nation. (Recent honors include: the most regional and national medals from the Scholastic Writing Awards in the nation; the nation’s top 2012 and 2013 Scholastic Awards Scholarships for Gold Medal Portfolioists; the 2012 and 2013 NYC Teen Literary Honor from New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg; a 2013 YoungArts Scholar Award.) OUR MISSION Writopia Lab is a not-for-profit organization that fosters joy, literacy, and critical thinking in children and teens from all backgrounds through creative writing. We do this by: Providing young people with the creative inspiration and intellectual environment that may not be available to them at school. Helping each student become comfortable with expressing himself on paper and to ultimately cultivate (or maintain) a love of writing in each of them. Creating and sustain a diverse community of young writers who find commonalities in a shared passion for ideas and expression. Offering discounted or waived fees to at least 40% of workshop participants. Providing an open, safe, and nurturing space for young people who are highly engaged in creative and intellectual endeavors. Providing an open, safe, and nurturing space for young people who struggle with verbal and written expression. Identifying ways that creative youth who struggle academically can use their gifts to further their academic success.
