Mission Statement
NYEP gives homeless young women (18-24) in the Reno area a chance to reroute their lives through a structured program that provides housing and basic needs, life skills training, opportunities to practice new life skills, and the support and love of a family. Our goal is to increase innovative housing programs services for youth that will effectively deliver safe housing, positive daily interaction, resource supports, skills training, monitoring and accountability to ensure youth are achieving desired outcomes.
About This Cause
Nevada Youth Empowerment Project (NYEP) is a unique, community-based service provider founded in 2007. NYEP empowers willing and capable directionless youth with necessary resources and supports to restore their potential in becoming productive community contributors. Our successful Community Living Program (CLP), a residential-based independent living curriculum is facilitated daily by professional staff to teach transition-aged female youth (18-24), who hope to live on their own, the success skills necessary to be self-directing and self-sustaining. To date, the CLP has served over 160 young women. It is 100% community funded and the only of its kind in the state of Nevada. Our agency approach creates an environment that motivates, supports, and empowers not only young people but also staff and volunteers to be productive. The philosophies that drive the agency approach include: ● Structure ● Standards ● Consistency ● Accountability NYEP is 100% community funded and receives no government dollars. We seek partners whose funding interests and/or desired youth outcomes align. These partnerships not only give NYEP the financial means to do its important work but also provide the necessary resources and opportunities to develop and implement the most effective and efficient solutions for wayward, unhoused, unsupported youth. During the 2020-2021 year, NYEP’s CLP served 17 older female youth. 82% of all youth served by the CLP successfully met high school proficiency requirements. 59% of all youth served by the CLP were also able to hold employment. 29% went on to college. 100% of the CLP graduates secured independent affordable housing upon program completion. And residents provided over 256 hours of volunteer service in the community and sewed and distributed over 1500 face masks. 90% of all agency funds were spent to facilitate the daily Community Living Program curriculum, including life skills training and support around typing time management, meal planning, cooking, shopping, volunteering, asset building, and personal responsibility. Daily accountability support (supportive confrontation and positive recognition) was also provided to participants around the program, work/school/volunteer, and banking expectations. NYEP’s affordable housing scattered site model, Sonder House, continues to be the solution to the transitioning CLP resident’s need for housing in this ever changing economy, especially with a less than 1% vacancy rate. Rent is $410/month and includes all utilities and wifi. To date, 20 CLP graduates have used the site. 100% of the young women served by this site are employed and/or in school or volunteering, maintaining a productive 40-hour week.
