About This Cause

The Humane Society for Boone County has a live release rate of 97.7% and has maintained this rate since it's inception in 2007. We focus on the abandoned, stray, neglected and through managed intake the surrendered dogs and cats in Boone County, Indiana. We provide necessary medical care, including spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, flea/tick treatments, appropriate vaccinations and microchipping. We provide heartworm treatment to dogs as needed. With only 3 full time and 3 part time budgeted employees, our volunteers are the heart of our organization and help more than 600 animals each year. Our programs focus on keeping pets in the homes versus coming into the shelter. Through our pet pantry, we provide more than 29,000 lbs of dry dog and cat kibble and more than 20,000 cans of wet dog and cat food to residents in need. We also provide spay/neuter services to low income residents to prevent the endless cycle of unwanted litters, and our Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) program focuses on ending the cycle of unwanted kitty litters throughout the county. We rely heavily on volunteers to foster our dogs, cats, puppies and kittens in their homes, providing all the materials and supplies needed. The foster provides the love and the home and this allows each animal to blossom and show what type of home will be its best furever home.
