HARTFORD CATHOLIC WORKER

Hartford, Connecticut, 06120 United States

Mission Statement

The Hartford Catholic Worker is a welcoming place in the north end of Hartford where people from our impoverished neighborhood, and beyond, gather to share, tutor children, make art, play sports, and bridge the racial, class, geographical, gender, and generational divisions in our land.

About This Cause

Since 1993, the Hartford Catholic Worker, known by the folks in our neighborhood as "the Green House", has been a place where love is practiced by all who come to our door. Everyone who comes to the Green House has something to share- whether it is time, a talent or a bit of treasure. We don't see each other as staff, volunteers, donors, and/or clients, but as members of the Beloved Community envisioned by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At the Green House folks young and old; Black, white and brown; urban, suburban and rural; straight, gay, or questioning; rich, poor and middle-class; and folk who are Christian, Moslem, Jewish or none of the above gather to: do homework, get a bike fix, learn how to fix a bike, get a bike, go on field trips to the Science Center, make art, play basketball, learn to sew, get an emergency bag of food, enjoy fresh fruit, get social work help, get help applying for college, spend time in the summer at Beach Pond in Voluntown, love and be loved.
