Mission Statement

The organization advances education by assisting the Montessori Academy of Chicago in the performance of its educational functions.

About This Cause

The organization will advance education by assisting the Montessori Academy of Chicago - a school based on and operated in accordance with the philosophies of Montessori education - in the performance of its educational functions. The organization will assist the Academy by (a) providing additional classroom materials to be used by teachers and students, (b) providing scholarships to children of families who wish to pursue a Montessori-based education, and (c) providing training for teachers based on the principles of Montessori-based education. Materials - The traditional Montessori materials were created with a mathematical base that impress a child's subconscious mind through repetitive, concrete experiences. One noticeable difference in a Montessori environment is the attention to aesthetic beauty through the use of natural materials. From the turn of the century, Maria Montessori observed that - like adults - children naturally learn to respect and care for beautiful things. To teach students to get a true sense of the world and utilize the resources of the Earth, Montessori classrooms are filled with materials made of wood, metal and glass. Such materials are initially expensive but - if cared for - may last for many years and add to the character of the traditional method. The materials in each classroom at the Academy have allowed its students to learn about cultures from around the globe, as well as different types of land and water forms that make up the planet - all while those students experience the joy of caring, creating and problem solving. Additionally, the Academy uses materials as part of its programs in martial arts, ballet, yoga, soccer, cooking and art. The organization will assist the Academy in the repair, maintenance and replacement of the Academy's classroom materials, as well as the addition of new materials as the interests of the Academy's students expand. It is important to note that all materials supplied by the organization will be above and beyond what is provided for in the Academy's budget for such materials - thereby allowing for more of the Academy's funds to be used for the education of its students. Scholarships - The essence of Montessori is a visions of the child as an active participant within the society in which the child lives, and an understanding of child development that demand a different ideology in respect to the individual potential and contribution of each child. Every child has the right to be nurtured and supported in this way. In Chicago, many children are not afforded such an opportunity due to financial constraints. The Academy's priority is to invite such students into the Montessori environment and foster their love and desire to learn through the Academy's programs and help them feel comfortable and confident, thereby allowing them to fully develop and release their human potential. The organization will assist in accomplishing these goals by awarding scholarships to disadvantage children (ages 3-12 years) in the greater Chicago area who do not otherwise have the opportunity to attend the Academy and to families who have one or more children in attendance at the Academy who need financial assistance to keep their child in a Montessori Environment. Training - Due to the particular nature of Montessori-based education, Montessori teachers (also referred to as directresses) require extensive specialized training and continual development to obtain and maintain the necessary skills to observe and work with each child on his or her own individual educational path. A directress is responsible for guiding each child through the prepared environment and providing the child with concrete experiences in sensory discrimination, practical life skills, mathematical concepts, language development, geography, history, botany, zoology, physical science, art, music and perceptual motor development. As mentioned above, the Montessori philosophy is aimed at the evolution of children through each person's educational journey towards a more peaceful world. The organization will provide financial assistance for training to its teachers - primarily through third party providers unrelated to the organization and its directors and officers - to equip those teachers with the skills and knowledge to excel in shaping young lives.
