Mission Statement

Faces of Tomorrow provides medical and surgical services to children with facial deformities in developing areas around the world. Faces of Tomorrow is culturally responsive and compassionate to the patients, their families, and the communities in which they live.

About This Cause

Faces of Tomorrow, founded in 2007 by Dr. Brian Rubinstein, is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Davis, CA. The organization’s mission is “Dedicated to giving children with facial deformities bright smiles for a brighter future.” Faces of Tomorrow fulfills that goal thanks to donations from private donors. When Faces of Tomorrow was founded, the organization was fortunate to be the recipient of a Smile Train grant, which provided the funding needed for the first two missions to Ecuador. However, now Faces of Tomorrow relies 100% on donations that come from individuals and small businesses in the form of monetary donations, sponsorships at fundraising events, and the donation of medical supplies. Volunteers and Patient Costs -- Utilizing a skilled team of volunteer health professionals enables Faces of Tomorrow to devote as much as 90 cents per donated dollar to their patients. Being a small non-profit, unencumbered by a large bureaucracy, allows the team to perform surgeries for approximately $250 a patient (this price considers only the cost of medical supplies needed for one surgery). Taking into account the travel, accommodations, and paperwork and licensing fees incurred, the all-inclusive cost breaks down to approximately $1,000 a patient. Not only do team members donate their time and expertise, but they also make a donation to the organization to help cover the cost of their airfare and hotel. Board and Advisory Board Members are also unpaid and make monetary donations like every other team member. Faces of Tomorrow has one paid employee who works on an as needed basis to manage mission logistics and the annual Fore for Faces fundraising event. Fundraising -- The largest fundraiser to benefit Faces of Tomorrow is the annual Fore for Faces event held each October at El Macero Country Club in Davis, CA. This event includes a golf tournament, silent and live auctions, dinner, and casino night festivities. In addition to the Fore for Faces event, there is an annual Aces for Faces Motorcycle and Poker Run, which raises approximately $5,000 each September in Idaho. Without fundraisers such as these, Faces of Tomorrow would not have the means to provide the surgeries for children in underdeveloped countries. Medical Outreach Trips -- Since 2009, the Faces of Tomorrow team, which consists of a 100% volunteer staff, has embarked on one medical outreach trip per year to developing country. However, in 2015 they staffed two separate teams to the Philippines in January and March. The board is pursuing locations and once again planning two separate medical missions in 2016. Faces of Tomorrow offers their surgical procedures free of charge to their patients. Most of the patients Faces of Tomorrow serves live in poverty unimaginable to most in the United States. Without these life-changing operations the children face a life wrought with physical and social impairments hindering their chances for a meaningful future. Unfortunately, without groups such as Faces of Tomorrow these children would never have access to cleft lip and palate repair surgeries. More so, without private donations from individuals and companies, Faces of Tomorrow would be unable to continue their work. Faces of Tomorrow Founder -- Dr. Rubinstein is the founder and director of Faces of Tomorrow. He is a board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and serves as chief of Pediatric Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Kaiser Permanente in Roseville, CA. He is also the assistant director of the Northern California Regional Craniofacial Panel for Kaiser Permanente. He received his BS degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and his M.D. and Masters of Science degree from the Rosalind Franklin University/The Chicago Medical School. Dr. Rubinstein continued on at the University of California at Davis to complete a residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Including outreach trips during his residency, Dr. Rubinstein has now participated on more than ten medical outreach trips to Ecuador and the Philippines. He has played a role in repairing cleft lip and palate deformities in nearly 700 children. The birth of Faces of Tomorrow is a long realized dream for this talented and compassionate physician. Why Faces of Tomorrow? -- Without organizations such as Faces of Tomorrow, children born with a cleft lip and/or palate suffer from malnutrition, are often shunned from their communities, which often results in them dropping out of school. In some cases these children are even abandoned by their families. It is amazing to think that is takes so little to literally transform a life. When the Faces of Tomorrow team repairs a facial deformity they give the patient a new opportunity at life. No longer is the patient an outcast; instead they have the opportunity to lead a full life filled with smiles. The ability to give that amazing gift to patients is the direct result of the many Faces of Tomorrow individual supporters who donate money, and the many companies that donate products and services. They are truly Faces of Tomorrow’s partners on each medical outreach trip.
