About This Cause
Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center (SCHHC), the sole hospital in Bandon, Oregon, is addressing rising patient volumes and demand for specialized services. The Southern Coos Health Foundation (SCHF) actively fundraises to support this growth and maintain high-quality, community-focused healthcare. 2024 key initiatives include: Master Facilities Plan (MFP): A multi-year project, generously funded by the Bandon Dunes Charitable Foundation, to improve infrastructure and service capabilities. This plan involves extensive community stakeholder input. Work has already begun on a new community pharmacy and expanded clinic space. Community Wellness Programs: The successful first "Living & Aging Well" program promoting healthy lifestyles based on Blue Zone principles. Other community engagement efforts include free health events 21st annual Women's Health Day, drive through COVID-19 and flu clinics, Bandon School District health fair, and subsidized screenings (PSA tests and mammograms) for underinsured residents. SCHF also supports local Bandon School District by helping fund one fulltime Registered Nurse and one parttime RN to serve school aged children during the school year. Investing in Healthcare Professionals: SCHF provides scholarships and supports ongoing professional development. Nine $2,500 scholarships were awarded in 2024. Technological Advancements: SCHHC implemented Epic, a leading Electronic Medical Health Record (EMR) system, and a new Enterprise Resource Planning system, improving efficiency and patient access to information. Strategic Planning: A new strategic plan (2024-2026) prioritizes expanding dermatology, surgical services, and primary/pediatric care, aiming to become the preferred medical provider for Coos County. In short, SCHHC and SCHF are collaboratively working to enhance healthcare access and quality in Bandon and the surrounding area through strategic planning, community engagement, and investment in infrastructure and personnel.
