About This Cause
Maunalua Fishpond Heritage Center is continuing Hawaii's ancient fishpond legacy of farming the ocean at two ancient fishponds-Kanewai Spring and Kalauha'iha'i Fishpond, both in East Honolulu. With knowledge passed down by the last kupuna fishpond keepers in the area, we are reviving our ancient fishponds and the knowledge that went with them. We work closely with schools to train young people to be the next knowledgeable stewards of the fishponds. We also serve kupuna and do extensive oral history work with the elders in the community to help guide the effort.
