About This Cause
(Characters left: 3000) New Era Colorado Foundation’s mission is to reinvent politics for young people, mobilizing and empowering a new generation to participate and lead in our democracy—making Colorado a better place for everyone. We were founded in 2006 by a group of CU Boulder students who believed that young people deserve a seat at the table. New generations serve as a renewal force for our society, demanding that our country live up to its espoused values of equality and justice. And yet, young people face significant barriers to accessing our democracy. New Era was founded to remove these barriers to meaningful civic engagement and build youth power in our democracy. Our theory of change is that more young people will participate in our democracy when they view it as accessible and relevant, and if more young people vote (as a key demographic of the New American Majority), then a more representative democracy will be formed allowing more equitable policies to advance. As young people see policy moving the needle on the issues they care about, our democracy becomes more compelling and responsive to young voters. New Era ultimately believes in a future where Colorado protects the dignity and humanity of our most marginalized. In fighting for this vision, New Era develops young leaders who form a political and social identity and find the power of their voice. Our integrated organizing model weaves youth empowerment into our three core programs: civic engagement, issue advocacy, and leadership development. Since our founding, we’ve registered over 250,000 young people to vote—consistently turning out those same registrants at one of the highest rates across the country. Our civic engagement program builds a habit of voting over time, so that young people continue to serve as a powerful force in our democracy. As we mobilize young people to participate, we also drive meaningful policy change on key issues impacting them, including reproductive rights, economic justice, election access, racial justice, and climate change. We identify young people who care about these issues and empower them to share their stories and demand change at the federal, state, and local level. As a result, we’ve also won at the legislature: gaining critical protections for student loan borrowers, voter preregistration for 16- and 17-year-olds, and guaranteed campus voter service centers and dropboxes. Finally, we are often a launching pad for young people in the progressive movement—our paid fellowship program trains young leaders and gives them practical experience working on campaigns. We are building an independent political home for Colorado’s young people, empowering them to lead flourishing, civically-engaged lives.
