About This Cause
Riverdale-Porterdale Cemetery Foundation was formed in 2007 and is dedicated to helping preserve three historically significant cemeteries in Columbus, Georgia: Porterdale, East Porterdale and Riverdale. We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The oldest of the three cemeteries is Porterdale, which is a large historically black cemetery with the first marked grave dated 1836. It is on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Black Heritage Trail. In 1946, Porterdale was expanded to a nearby field and this location became East Porterdale. Meanwhile, in 1890, the city fathers established Riverdale due to concerns about space limitations in the city's oldest cemetery, Linwood. To carry out our mission, we work with the Columbus Consolidated Government, which owns the three cemeteries. While they city is responsible for administration and maintenance, we work to enhance the cemeteries through preservation and beautification projects. Examples include restoration of the Riverdale Building, built in 1916; construction of entry gates at each cemetery; adding a fountain and courtyard; landscaping; restoring the Riverdale Pavilion and more. In addition to preservation and improvements, we also promote an awareness of the historical significance of the cemeteries and tell the stories of notable citizens who are buried here. We are happy to assist families and researchers in locating burial records and grave sites, and are working to preserve original cemetery records and make this information more available to the public.
