Mission Statement
Big Picture Philadelphia provides transformative educational experiences for under-served high school youth through proven, sustainable educational practices and, in so doing, contributes to Philadelphia’s city-wide educational reform efforts. We are proud members of the national Big Picture Learning network, which successfully serves at-risk youth in more than 60 schools nationwide.
About This Cause
As a nonprofit education provider, Big Picture Philadelphia provides supports and services in two Philadelphia public high schools. The schools, el Centro de Estudiantes and Vaux Big Picture High School, currently enroll 519 students. The Big Picture Philadelphia approach is rooted in the project-based, internship-focused model first developed by our national affiliate, Big Picture Learning. El Centro, a school of 205 "Opportunity Youth" students (not working nor in school and between 16-21 years of age), operates as an alternative school in the School District of Philadelphia and is the flagship school in the Big Picture Philadelphia network. It operates with a cohort model of students at four levels, and has a three year graduation rate of 75%. Vaux BPHS is a neighborhood high school in the School District of Philadelphia, currently enrolling 314 students in grades 9-11. After opening with 9th grade in 2017, one grade level has been added each year, and the first graduating class of seniors will be in June 2021. Contractual relationships with the school district provide 88% of funding and the balance of annual funds is from corporate sponsors, charitable foundations, and individuals. The three programs Big Picture Philadelphia provides across both schools are Real World Learning/Learning Through Internships, Resiliency Services, and Post-Secondary Planning. Charitable contributions can be directed to one of these three programs, or as undesignated to the Annual Fund.
