About This Cause

Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition is a woman-run, volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming homeless cats, addressing the root causes of homeless cat overpopulation, providing affordable spay/neuter services to rescuers and underserved communities, and supporting and advocating for the individuals and small rescue groups that are rescuing cats from the streets of New York City. In 2016, Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition opened its community adoption and rescue space, Brooklyn Cat Cafe, one of the only cat cafes in the country operated as a non-profit rescue organization. Since it opened, over 120,000 people have visited Brooklyn Cat Cafe from around the world, and hundreds have attended our private events and classes. In addition to adoptable cats and kittens housed at Brooklyn Cat Cafe, we operate one of the largest in-home foster programs for cats in New York City. In 2023, BBAWC received a grant from New York State to expand Brooklyn Cat Cafe. The new space features New York City’s only public mom and kitten nursery; New York City’s only shelter space for feline leukemia positive cats; and Brooklyn’s only public outdoor catio. The space also hosts a variety of Brooklyn Cat Cafe events. In 2020, BBAWC launched a discounted veterinary clinic for cat rescuers at Brooklyn Cat Cafe and in the fall of 2021, opened a deeply discounted spay/neuter and surgery clinic for cat rescuers and low-income cat owners. Currently our spay/neuter clinic is the most affordable option for low-income cat owners to get their cats spayed and neutered without waiting months or years for an appointment.
