Mission Statement
The mission of The Tobin Center, a local non-profit arts organization, is to provide a world-class venue that promotes a diverse range of cultural, educational, and artistic experiences that improve the quality of life in San Antonio.
About This Cause
The Tobin Center includes 3 venues: H-E-B Performance Hall, a 1,750-seat space; Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater, a 300-seat flexible seating theater; and Will Naylor Smith Plaza, an exterior venue along San Antonio's Riverwalk. The Tobin was founded with diversity and inclusion of offerings and audiences in mind. There is no specific target group, but we work intentionally to include the many cultures, ethnicities, and socio-economic groups of Bexar County. Our shows include events for all such as: Annie Leibovitz, Black Violin, Aziz Ansari, Dolly Parton, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and Ballet Folklórico de México. As a nonprofit, we offer opportunities to the community, area schools, and local professional performing arts companies. Education - Performing arts and education go hand in hand. The Tobin Center is also the community's “flagship for education“. In 2016, Generation NEXT was created to provide underserved communities throughout the region access to arts experiences and educational programming. Pre-K through 12th grade students, special needs individuals, teachers, and aspiring artists participate in a variety of educational offerings that are free or deeply discounted. Community - The Tobin Center holds free events throughout the year to ensure equity in participation for the entire community. The Wellness at the Tobin program is a series of weekly, free public experiences (Yoga, Pilates, Dance, Meditation, Drum Circles, etc.) designed to address aspects of living and well being. Cinema on Will's Plaza is a monthly movie night for families. We screen movies on our giant outdoor video wall and open to the public free of charge. Additionally, we host free cultural festivals with live music, food, and local artisans, a Holiday Market, and our annual Tobin Center Open House. Resident Companies - The Tobin Center is home to five local performing arts companies including Ballet San Antonio, Opera San Antonio, Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA), Classical Music Institute, and Children's Chorus of San Antonio. We provide these organizations with first pick of venue dates; significantly reduced rental rates for events, rehearsals, and performances; office and/or meeting spaces at no charge; and access to our ticketing, marketing, and front of house volunteers. Our presence in Bexar County has strengthened its economic impact and cultural footprint. The Tobin Center's programs and performances have become integral to our way of life. Whether you give through one of our membership programs or you make a dedicated donation without membership benefits, your generosity supports our mission to provide a diverse range of cultural, educational, and artistic experiences that improve the quality of life in San Antonio and the region.
