About This Cause
Founded in 1974, the Friends of the Morgan Hill Library is a group of volunteers who are committed to enhancing programs, services and facilities at the library in Morgan Hill, California. They raise money through memberships, donations and Book Sales. These funds are used to provide programs and activities and to purchase materials and furnishings for which there are no provisions in the library budget. For over 45 years, the Friends of the Morgan Hill Library (FMHL) has partnered closely with the Community Librarian to support the changing needs of patrons beyond what the library budget can accommodate. Examples of the Friends ongoing adult programming and materials support are the Best Seller Collection, Book Club, Silicon Valley Reads, and Speakers Forum programs. Regular toddler, preschool, bilingual Story Time entertainment for families, STEAM, and other children and teen programs also are popular and well-attended. Summer Reading programs for all ages are supported by FMHL through incentives to meet reading goals. Facility support by the Friends includes specialized shelving for more productive use of space, adjustable accessible workstations, other furnishings, and public art. A major Friends effort in coordinating the Beyond Books campaign over 15 years ago raised more than $180,000 for the then new library, thanks to the generosity of donors. FMHL depends on the community for regular donations of good quality materials to be sold at amazingly low prices at the Friends Bookstore and at scheduled “Big Book Sales”. Online sales through an Amazon storefront allow the Friends to sell more unusual and specially priced items. FMHL must rely on a committed volunteer base for success in the Bookstore operation, the proceeds of which go directly to the library. Besides book sale income, the Friends assist library staff with applicable grant opportunities and apprise the Community Librarian of any cash donor preferences. By including the Community Librarian during the annual budgeting process with checkpoints during the course of the year, the focus is on ensuring key priorities are identified, addressed, and on track. The Friends of the Morgan Hill library are proud of their supporters, volunteers, and library staff. All provide valued services that benefit the entire community which includes Morgan Hill and nearby unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County.
