Mission Statement
The Gift of Hope USA is dedicated to caring for South African women and children infected with and affected by HIV. We partner with well respected clinical organizations in South Africa to establish and fund programs that fill critical gaps in care. The Gift of Hope strives to ensure that all women and children have access to high quality, holistic HIV care and treatment, regardless of their financial ability. Our mission is predicated on several key beliefs: All people should have access to high quality, holistic and patient centered health care; All children should be born free of HIV; All people living with HIV should have access to lifelong care and treatment and live free of shame and stigma; Every individual has the power to make a difference in the life of another person in need and give the gift of hope. 100% of our donations go directly to our programs, as all administrative costs for The Gift of Hope are underwritten by the founders.
About This Cause
The Gift of Hope USA is a registered 501c3 that partners with well established clinical organizations in South Africa. Originally working with partner organizations in Kwa Zulu Natal, since 2013 the Gift of Hope has partnered with The Witkoppen Clinic (Witkoppen). Established in 1946, Witkoppen is a non-profit organization that provides comprehensive primary health care and social welfare services to impoverished residents of the informal settlements in the far Northerns Suburbs of Johannesburg. The Gift of Hope helped design and continues to fund two initiatives at Witkoppen: A FRESH Start (A Future Realized through Eduction, Support and Healthcare), and Sponsor A Mother and Child. A FRESH Start, our signature program in partnership with Witkoppen, is designed to offer a holistic approach to care for mother and child from age 0 to 18 months. With services like repeat HIV testing, wellness care for mother and child, educational and psychosocial support, nutritional support and acute care, we are able to promote the health of our patients and prevent the transmission of HIV from mother-to-child during the first 18 months of life. As part of the Well-Mother Program, there are routine check-ups, ARV treatment and adherence support, pap smears performed according to DOH guidelines, family planning services, breast feeding support and nutritional education. The Well-Child Program includes a full schedule of immunizations, HIV testing according to the National guidelines, as well as growth, nutritional and developmental monitoring. The program continues to provide essential healthcare services to the mother and child dyads during this critical early childhood development phase. Literature has shown the importance of these 18 months for the future health of mother and child, and this program is filling critical gaps in care in Johannesburg and the areas surrounding the city in South Africa. Witkoppen and GOH strive to ensure zero transmission of HIV from mother-to-child during the first 18 months for the future health of mother and child. There are currently more than 1,000 mother and child visits each month to A FRESH Start, and there has been zero HIV transmission to babies in the past five years, so we see this model program as a great success.
