About This Cause
BlackPast.org was founded on February 1, 2007 in Seattle, Washington by Dr. Quintard Taylor, the Scott and Dorothy Bullitt Professor of American History, and his associates. The website is an online encyclopedia designed to provide accurate information on people, places, events, and episodes in African American and global African history free and unrestricted to a global audience. The online encyclopedia has more than 10,000 posts including 8,000 posts of original content reflecting the history of African America and the more than one billion people of African ancestry around the world. The site also features primary documents, speeches of prominent African Americans, a genealogy page, links to most major African American museums in the U.S. and museums about people of African ancestry around the world, historical timelines, special pages on the Civil War, scientists involved in the World War II Manhattan Project, and major officeholders, including profiles of African and Caribbean political leaders past and present. Finally, we feature 101 African American "firsts," as well as content showcasing important landmarks and monuments, and all the current heads of state of Africa and the nations of the West Indies.
