Mission Statement
Hudson River Community Sailing was founded in 2007 as a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization to provide experiential learning to underserved New York City youth through sailing and marine education. We partner with public middle and high schools to offer credit-bearing academic programs, internships, mentoring, and college readiness. Our youth development platform uses sailing, boat operation, and boat building to further academic skills and instill the qualities of character necessary for college and career success. We also serve the broader community through affordable marine education and recreation for individuals, groups, schools, businesses, and families.
About This Cause
Our public school youth program is designed to be intensive and transformative, providing support throughout a student’s high school career. Statistics regarding our target population show that on average 74% are not meeting NY state math standards and 46% will not graduate from high school on time.1 They face limited structured after-school and summer activities. HRCS recruits students entering their first year of high school, and through its year-long after-school program, Sail Academy, provides the opportunity to earn academic credit in mathematics, science, and physical education. Additionally students learn the important life skills of teamwork, self-reliance, persistence, and responsibility both on our boats and in our classroom. Our curriculum was designed with NYC Department of Education partner teachers to support NY state standards. 82% of the students enrolled this past academic year gained a math and science credit with attendance rates of over 90%. After successfully completing Sail Academy, students are eligible to continue in our First Mates program—which provides a scaffolded set of youth development experiences that prepare students for college and career. Our First Mates continue to develop their skills and expertise in sailing and the marine environment, boat building and maintenance, navigation, and racing. With the help of a strong volunteer corps, we provide ongoing mentoring, competitive racing, college entrance preparation, homework support, summer employment assistance, and career discovery. Each summer we provide 10 students with a structured internship where they apprentice with professional sailing instructors to deliver our youth camp, City Sail.
