Mission Statement
Our mission is to inspire, educate, and connect San José communities, using media to foster civic engagement. We embrace this mission in partnership with our community, providing training, tools, and platforms to share our stories through digital media and technology. We acknowledge the histories of inequity and ongoing exclusion in our society, and strive to provide access for our community members, especially those that have faced systemic barriers to self-expression.
About This Cause
CreaTV San José was founded in 2008 as a Public Access cable TV station and manages four channels through an agreement with the City of San Jose and Comcast Cable. As the media and technology landscape changed and needs of the community evolved, CreaTV shifted its focus from simply production and content delivery, to intentionally amplifying the voices of our diverse community. As media ownership became more concentrated we saw the opportunity to help create a more equitable media ecosystem. Our programs offer comprehensive media education, production services for nonprofits, and community engagement opportunities that provides spaces and tech resources for community to share their unique stories, gather and convene, and use arts and culture to bring attention to critical issues. Our programs provide avenues for artistic self-expression, exploration of media and art centric careers, and equitable access to media and technology tools. Today, our programs provide avenues for artistic self-expression and storytelling, exploration of media and art centric careers, and equitable access to media and technology tools and training for all ages. This year, CreaTV opened our new 18,000 square foot facility— Open San José—that has office space, gallery and public spaces, a large studio, and multi-purpose rooms that are fully equipped with technology and designed to be used for live and hybrid meetings, performance rehearsal space, podcast and media recording, trainings, and more. We use our resources and technology to increase equitable access to arts and culture programs and services to systemically excluded community members. We partnered with six nonprofits (Chopsticks Alley Art, LEAD Filipino, Mosaic America, NorCal Public Media, San José Spotlight, and Works/San José) that have co-design the space, vision, and community governance structure. We see collaboration and authentic relationship building as a key strategy to the our ability to have impact. This is not co-working. This is co-building. Open San José is a unique community resource for creating, convening, learning, sharing, archiving, and disseminating. The facility features two gallery spaces, office and storage, and 5 multipurpose collaboration spaces that are technology equipped to be used for live and hybrid events, rehearsal space, media creation, trainings, and more. The space provides free and below market equitable access to traditionally systemically excluded community.
