About This Cause

Target Population Served: Kid Power provides free after-school and summer programs to 425 youth in underserved communities in DC. Additionally, it serves 1,000 students during the school-day with its award-winning VeggieTime program. Students and their families are served in the following DC neighborhoods (Wards 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8): Fort Totten (LaSalle-Backus Education Campus), Trinidad (Browne Education Campus), Lincoln Heights (Houston ES), Southeast-of-the-Anacostia (Stanton ES, Sousa MS, Malcolm X ES), SW Waterfront (Jefferson MS), Columbia Heights (H.D. Cooke ES), and Petworth (Barnard ES). Students are 79% African-American, 20% Latino, and 1% Asian and Other. Approximately 98% of the students qualify for the free or reduced price lunch program. Kid Power Programs: 1) The Academic Power Hour links school-day academics to innovative and engaging after-school activities. Using a 1:7 adult to student ratio, Kid Power staff and volunteers provide differentiated instruction to help meet youth’s individualized academic needs. Students participate in homework help and small group, hands-on academic activities aligned to the Common Core Standards. 2) The Citizenship Project is a multi-faceted approach to civics education. Using a literacy-building and civic engagement curriculum, students study US history and the building blocks of citizenship and implement youth-led community action projects. Students and their mentors from local high schools and universities complete the Citizenship workbook, which includes reading comprehension, critical thought, vocabulary-building exercises, and group activities. Students then implement youth-led service-learning projects to improve their communities. 3) The VeggieTime Project connects a standard-based environmental science and nutrition/health curriculum to hands-on gardening, cooking, and market operations. Students study organic agriculture, nutritional concepts, environmental science, and healthy living practices through Kid Power’s original curriculum. They then apply these lessons to their school gardens. Youth bring a portion of the produce home to help meet family needs, use a portion for healthy cooking classes, and sell a portion at local farmers markets. Youth then direct market proceeds to fund nutritional and environmental service-learning projects in their schools and communities. 4) The Summer Leadership Academy is a 5-week full-day Academy that takes a multi-faceted approach to summer learning. It helps to close the achievement gap by providing underserved youth with the opportunity to acquire key academic, civic, nutritional and workforce development skills through innovative and hands-on projects that based on each of Kid Power’s programs.
