Mission Statement
The New Amsterdam School is founded on Rudolf Steiner’s principles of education and the development of child, self and community. Rooted in the anthroposophical view of the human being, the school is devoted to the artistic process of developing imaginative and critical thinking, emotional maturity and the social responsibility necessary to serve the world. New Amsterdam supports the unfolding of each individual’s true self—both child and adult—and aspires to awaken children, teachers and parents alike to the needs of the world now and in the future. At New Amsterdam, we educate free individuals capable of imagining and creating an inclusive, responsive, and sustainable future. We are committed to educating children in this way regardless of their parents’ financial situation, and as such are developing toward a model in which our school community truly reflects the diversity of our city. All children will impact the future of our society; it is our belief that our children will have a happy, healthy, and secure future only when they learn to build it together with all members of the community. The future starts here.
About This Cause
Founded in 2006, New Amsterdam School began as a grassroots alliance of educators, parents, and community leaders determined to bring the benefits of Waldorf education to Lower Manhattan. New Amsterdam School is an independent, nonsectarian school dedicated to educating a diverse community of children and their parents. As a member of WECAN (the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America) and Associate Member of AWSNA (Association of Waldorf Schools of North America), our school is part of the well-established Waldorf movement that today includes over 1000 schools and 1600 early childhood programs in 58 countries. Waldorf education is the fastest-growing independent school movement in the world. New Amsterdam is a small, home-like school, where our warm community nourishes children and their families. Teachers integrate art, movement and music into the daily life of the students, igniting the imagination and awakening a life-long joy in learning, while parents are offered enrichment opportunities throughout the year and work together to co-create the life of the school. We come together as a community to celebrate meaningful seasonal festivals, such as the Spiral of Light in December and the Spring Festival in May. Our comprehensive Waldorf curriculum inspires reverence for the natural world, for one’s self, and for others, while building practical, social, and cognitive skills necessary for success in any environment. New Amsterdam students leave the school ready for whatever their next step may be. Our students have gone on to schools such as St. Anne's, Little Red School House, and Calhoun, in addition to local public schools.
