Mission Statement
The Crescent City Farmers Market is operated by Market Umbrella, a nonprofit organization. For over 26 years, Market Umbrella has operated farmers markets, provided community programs to increase food access, and conducted farmer training to effect both supply and demand for local food in New Orleans. With a mission focused on public markets for public good, we create thriving public places where all New Orleanians are welcome to savor local food and grow social connections in our community.
About This Cause
Our work supports Southeast Louisiana foodways and culture, serves as a small business incubator and supporter of the local economy, and provides food access programs to help all New Orleanians have greater access to fresh, local foods. The Crescent City Farmers Market operates weekly farmers markets in the New Orleans area, hosting over 60 local small farmers, fishers, and food producers, and more than 100,000 shoppers annually. While the pandemic has shifted the market experience, Market Umbrella has pivoted around new approaches for engaging the community, including walk-up and drive-thru markets, at-home food box delivery, and a variety of educational and assistance programs to ensure access to healthy, local food for our most vulnerable community members. Donations help to support essential programs that take place at the Crescent City Farmers Market such as Market Match, the Market Mommas Club, and Meet Me at the Market! Through our Market Match program, we help vulnerable families with limited means to buy fresh fruits and vegetables and eat healthier while supporting local farmers by matching SNAP purchases dollar-for-dollar to spend on fruits and vegetables. Market Mommas Club pairs healthy food incentives with breastfeeding support for new and expecting mothers that are enrolled in or eligible for WIC. And through Meet Me at the Market, children learn that food is not just something that comes from a shelf. This nutrition education program introduces New Orleans school children to the hard working families that grow, catch, and bake the food we eat, and they learn to identify all types of local foods.
