Mission Statement
Project HEAL is the largest nonprofit in the U.S. delivering prevention, treatment financing, and recovery support for people suffering from eating disorders.
About This Cause
Project HEAL is the leading organization in the US that funds treatment for those with eating disorders. Kristina Saffran and Liana Rosenman founded Project HEAL at age 15 after recovering from anorexia. Initially, they founded HEAL to provide treatment to those struggling with eating disorders. They’ve funded 68 people to date from all over the US, ranging in age from 12-55 years old. They’ve partnered with over 30 eating disorder treatment centers across the US and received over $1 million of donated in-kind treatment services. They’ve also surrounded themselves with the leading eating disorder experts in the world to establish a vetting process and help them select applicants. And they have over 40 chapters worldwide that provide education, awareness, hope and inspiration, and fundraise for the national treatment grant program. As a result, Kristina and Liana have become some of the leading voices carrying the message that full recovery from an eating disorder is possible. They have amassed 28k followers on FB and Instagram, inspiring those touched by eating disorders that full recovery is possible. But they’re just getting started. Building on the groundswell of grassroots support around Project HEAL, Kristina and Liana recently teamed up with the top eating disorder researchers in the world to develop a bold proposal for driving broader change in eating disorder care. They are now launching a more cost-effective, evidence-based model to strengthen eating disorder prevention and provide peer-led, lower levels of care across the globe. Supported by the academic experts, as well as by leaders in technology, and led by millennials in recovery, they have the potential to reach millions of people with eating disorders who suffer in silence. The new program, “Communities of Support,” will leverage the Project HEAL chapters and volunteer community to lead a four-touch cyclical and scalable program that is available to those at all levels of eating disorder recovery as well as the caregivers/support systems of those with eating disorders. Through one-on-one mentorship, peer-led support groups, meal support groups, and eating disorder prevention in schools, Communities of Support will create a community where early detection, prevention, and full recovery of eating disorders is encouraged and possible. At just 24 years old, they’re making a huge impact in the eating disorder space, have been written up in Fast Company magazine for “running their non-profit like a Silicon Valley start up,” and were just named in January to Forbes’ list of “30 under 30” young social entrepreneurs. Supporters include Arianna Huffington, UBER, The SF 49ers, Johnson & Johnson, Recovery Record, and the former Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, Tom Insel, and his new employer, Google. They’ve rallied together an impressive board of directors, and surrounded themselves with the world eating disorder experts on their clinical advisory board.
