Mission Statement

Turning for Home, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that has provided over 4,400 former racehorses with a safe retirement. The program was created through the foresight of the Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (PTHA), which revolutionized the model for racehorse retirement. Responding to the need for a better system that addressed the uncertain future for the retiring equine population at Parx Racing, the PTHA rallied horsemen to support the program. Turning for Home became the first on-track retirement program at a year-round racetrack. Our mission is to provide an alternative to auction and slaughter for Parx Racing’s Thoroughbred racehorses when their careers have ended by placing them with approved adoption organizations that will work to find them new homes and careers. We follow our horses and will always accept any TFH horse back for rehabilitation, retraining, and rehoming.

About This Cause

Rehabilitate. Retrain. Rehome. Relove. At Parx Racing, we truly take care of our own. Turning for Home, Inc. (TFH) was established to provide a safe and responsible transition for our retiring racehorses. Funded primarily by Parx horse owners, Parx Jockeys, the Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (PTHA), Parx Racetrack Management, and the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association (PHBA), we have become a model program for racetracks nationwide, as recognized by The Jockey Club and other leading industry organizations. A Commitment to Every Horse Owners looking to retire a horse with TFH simply complete an information sheet and sign over the foal papers. These papers are then sent to The Jockey Club and recorded as “Retired from Racing,” ensuring that every horse placed in our program will never race again. Every horse racing at Parx Racing is accepted into Turning for Home. Because we are based right on the grounds of Parx Racing, we have a unique ability to schedule emergency veterinary care immediately. Horses that might have otherwise faced uncertain futures often receive the treatment they need to recover and go on to second careers with minimal to no limitations. Each week, track veterinarians evaluate five to eight horses, reviewing x-rays and ultrasounds as needed. Our partnerships with The Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center, Hogan Equine, and Penn Vet’s New Bolton Center allow for expert diagnostics and surgical procedures at cost, ensuring each horse has the best chance at a healthy, productive future. A Model for Aftercare While Turning for Home is not a sanctuary, we work tirelessly to ensure each horse has the best opportunity for a fulfilling second career. With the help of dedicated volunteers, industry organizations, and trusted Partner Farms, we’ve placed thousands of horses into new, loving homes. TFH has emerged as a leader in Thoroughbred aftercare, with our model being replicated by racetracks and programs across the country, including the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA). Most importantly, we have established a sustainable funding mechanism that provides long-term safety and security for our retired racehorses, giving them the second careers and dignified retirements they deserve. Protecting Horses, Preserving Racing The words "horse" and "slaughter" should never belong in the same sentence. TFH takes a proactive stance against inhumane slaughter while ensuring the safety of our horses and the integrity of the racing industry. Our sport not only provides jobs and economic benefits to local and state economies, but it also carries a deep-rooted history—one that we are committed to preserving responsibly. Through the vision of the PTHA, established under Michael P. Ballezzi, Esq. and led currently by President Robert Hutt and Executive Director Jeffrey Matty, Jr., Parx Racing’s horses are guaranteed a secure retirement. Recognized with an Award of Merit from Thoroughbred Charities of America (2015) and honors from the Senate of Pennsylvania (2017), TFH has set the standard for racehorse aftercare. A Community Effort Our success is made possible by: ✅ Parx Horse Owners ✅ Parx Racing, Inc. ✅ Parx Racing’s Jockey Colony ✅ Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association (PHBA) ✅ The PTHA Board of Directors, Trainers, Horsemen ✅ Partner Farm managers, veterinarians, equine professionals, volunteers, and adopters Together, we are changing the landscape of Thoroughbred Aftercare—one horse at a time. Thank you for opening your hearts and supporting PTHA’s Turning for Home.
