Mission Statement
The mission of the Dayton Regional STEM School is to prepare students with the skills necessary to compete in the global economy while nurturing in our young people the same enthusiasm for discovery, invention, and application that launched the vision for powered flight. This mission is inspired by the Dayton Region's history, and is aimed at ensuring our community's future success.
About This Cause
The Dayton Regional STEM School (DRSS) first opened its doors in 2009 with one 9th grade class and a handful of staff. Now, in 2018, it serves nearly 650 students in grades 6-12, from nine counties and 35 school districts. DRSS is an independent, public school, and a 501(c)(3). Teachers at DRSS utilize a Project Based Learning (PBL) model that supports the instructional mission of preparing students to succeed in the real world. Projects encourage critical thinking and problem solving skills as students achieve their personal and academic goals. DRSS equips students for college and career success with a focus on fostering five important 21st Century skills: persistence, inquiry, communication, creativity, and collaboration. Students create digital online portfolios that illustrate growth in relation to those qualities, and they present those portfolios each year that they are enrolled at DRSS. DRSS students engage with professionals in relevant fields of study across STEM disciplines. This happens through curriculum-based projects, career fairs, job shadowing, and internships. In addition to their academic requirements, all DRSS students must complete at least 72 hours of an internship in order to graduate.
