Mission Statement

The Leti Resource Center seeks to make a positive difference by promoting bonds of unity and care among people of goodwill who have been diversely endowed. Those who can, share their money, talent, and goods to promote education, women's empowerment, safe water, economic development, and public health in Isingiro, Uganda.

About This Cause

Leti Resource Center was founded to promote education, health, and social development in Isingiro, located in the southwestern part of Uganda, at the border with Tanzania and Rwanda. Isingiro’s poverty is rooted in its history, social structures, and economy. The name “Isingiro” means “a place of victory.” Before the British came to Uganda late in the nineteenth century, warring tribes often used Isingiro as a battleground, leaving it totally deserted. In the 1970s, it was in Isingiro that Idi Amin Dada did battle with the Tanzania-based troops seeking to overthrow him. After Amin was sent into exile, for another twenty years Isingiro continued to be used as a military recruiting and training ground. Many adult men and women, as well as children, were conscripted into combat. Many perished, and many of those who remain have deep physical and psychological wounds. The efforts to help the people of Isingiro renew their social, moral, and economic situation has been slow and difficult. Families, communities, and schools still operate in unimaginable poverty. To address this situation local elders asked Rev. Dr. Leo Tinkatumire, who grew up in Isingiro, to establish and lead initiatives in the District of Isingiro, the most significant of which is the Leti Resource Center. Leti Resource Center is overseen by a Board of Directors in the United States, which coordinates with the Leti Foundation for Africa, in Kampala. The Center, which is staffed with volunteers, operates with little or no overhead. Its website, www.letiresourcecenter.com, describes its mission and goals and offers snapshots of its programs. In the United States, the Center is managed by Dr. Thomas Masters, who under the Board’s direction, recruits other volunteers, suggests fundraising strategies, maintains a donor list and financial records, and channels donations to the Leti Foundation for Africa in Uganda. Funds are needed to support three categories of initiatives: education, health and emancipation. • Educational projects include: o Building and operating Leo Primary School o Sponsoring students from Kindergarten to University o Adult Education through Women’s Clubs and Youth Clubs • Health Projects include: o St. Oliva Medical Center, which provides treatment for students, staff and community members. o The Safe Water Project, which builds water cisterns, since Isingiro’s ground water is not potable. • The principal emancipation project is a credit union, the Isingiro Business Community SACCO. In addition to financial services, it has an educational function: parents and other community members learn discipline and in turn educate their children and develop the community.
