Mission Statement

Just Health Action advocates for reducing health inequities that result from social, economic, environmental, and political conditions. We research and document health inequities and we lead interactive workshops to engage diverse groups to build skills towards systems level change.

About This Cause

Just Health Action (JHA) is based in Seattle, Washington. Since 2004, JHA has been advocating to reduce health inequities that result from the social, political, environmental, and economic inequalities that affect the health of our society (social determinants of health). JHA has developed a critical health literacy curriculum, which refers to an individual’s understanding of the social determinants of health combined with the skills to take action at both the individual and community level. It has taught critical health literacy in diverse educational settings around the country including in graduate and undergraduate university courses, secondary school settings, at community health clinics, healthcare organizations, and public health departments. Using a participatory learning and action approach, JHA collaborates with communities to conduct research on inequities in order to influence decision makers. In order to operationalize critical health literacy, JHA partners with local community organizations and community members in South Seattle’s Duwamish Valley, an environmental justice community, to take action on issues that they prioritize. Projects include supporting the installation of green infrastructure to filter air pollution; assisting with community science research; co-developing community health advocate programs; and co-writing an equity policy resolution with a community advisory team.
