Mission Statement
Fenix Theatre Company produces high-quality theatre at no cost to the public, providing accessible classical productions in an outdoor setting. We are a group of artists dedicated to staging exceptional theatre using the simplest means possible in order to produce work that lives where the creativity, commitment, and passion of the artist meets the imagination of the audience. We value showcasing the passion and brilliance of local artists. We value the creation of dynamic, inclusive, low barrier theatre that places the simplicity of storytelling over unnecessary distractions. We value theatre as a viable artistic, educational, and entertainment outlet that is relevant and free to all members of the community.
About This Cause
Over the past 12 years of staging free productions of Shakespeare and other classical artists in the natural beauty of Deering Oaks Park in the heart of Portland, Maine, Fenix Theatre Company has grown into an ensemble of committed professional artists who strive to create art that is accessible to populations traditionally under-represented in the audience of today’s theatre. We produce work that is portable and can be adapted to unconventional spaces in order to reach divergent audiences. Fenix’s audience is a crucial component of our shows, often being included into the scene and used as props, confidantes, hiding places, shields, etc. Nothing provides more satisfaction than seeing audience members who span the demographic spectrum react to our productions with delight, often times while seeing their first theatrical production.
