Golden Heart Ranch (GHR) provides young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities opportunities to reach their fullest potentials and enjoy meaningful, satisfying and joyful lives. We are an inclusive community where all young adults learn, work and create lifelong friendships in a supportive and caring environment.
About This Cause
Vision A crisis exists 80% of American special needs young adults are unable to live outside of their families’ homes after leaving the school system. 90% of them will never be able to work a day job. Our system doesn’t provide a place for special needs kids after they graduate high school. For most families, finding a suitable community for their special needs child--the kind of place that demonstrates a realistic and holistic focus on quality of life, with on-and-off site jobs and activities designed around the specific needs of individual residents--remains a distant dream. This problem is set to grow: a 500,000-strong tidal wave of special needs students will exit American schools within the next five years. The time to provide a future for America's special needs children is now. The Ranch Golden Heart Ranch® is a “life-center” (a permanent, life-long home) residential community. The center will be dedicated to the continued safety, growth and achievements of special needs adults. When the Ranch launches, it will be filled with young special needs adults for whom it will become a permanent home. The Ranch houses will be organized in a cul de sac on one end of the property. Each house will provide a home for up to four adults, with one 'mentor' living alongside. Meals will be cooked by each ‘family’, with all ranch hands expected to participate with cooking and clean up. Each individual will have his/her own room with a private bathroom. Each bedroom will be large enough to accommodate a small sitting area with space for a desk and computer. Common areas within homes will include a living room, kitchen, dining room, and game/media room. The property will be designed to provide opportunities for learning and recreation, with amenities such as: • A large community club house/media center with coffee house for dances, social gatherings and entertainment • Horses for equestrian therapy • Learning centers for continued education • Sustainable, non water-intensive landscaping • Art programs for recreation and therapy • A commons-style park with barbecues, a sport court and other outdoor activities • A securely gated outdoor swimming pool with hot tub for aquatic therapy • A network of landscaped footpaths through the complex that will be wide and flat to accommodate walkers, wheelchairs and golf carts • Inviting, landscaped sitting areas will be spread throughout the complex • Fountains with adjacent glider benches, exquisite and environmentally conscious landscaping, bird feeders and butterfly plants are all part of a total strategy designed to create a peaceful, welcoming environment. One of the most important assets that Golden Heart Ranch® has is our ability to provide on-site and off-site jobs tailored to the capabilities and interests of individual ranch hands. To accommodate for a wide range of both potential skills and unique challenges, the Ranch is designed to provide a wide variety of potential jobs.
