Mission Statement

EPATT's mission is to provide a transformative, comprehensive after-school experience for our students (K through 12) to insure that they graduate from high school with the academic, physical and personal qualities necessary for future success. Our goal is to combat the low High School Graduation rates (25%-35%) of youth in the East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park area.

About This Cause

Academic: Homework assistance is a part of each tutoring session but skill building is our primary focus as we want to empower and impact our program participants rather than just provide a service. -125 children work with 110 Stanford University students who volunteer to academically tutor the children one-on-one for a minimum of one academic quarter. Most tutees and tutors are matched for the entire year. Over 95% of EPATT sutdents graduate from high school. -Tutoring runs 4 days per week, 180 days per year. A summer program that runs 6 weeks is not included in the tutoring days. -Tutors are kept accountable by Volunteer Tutor Coordinators and they must fill out a tutor log after each tutoring session. Tutoring logs are written accounts of tutoring sessions. -The average retention rate for children in our program is 2.9 yrs and tutors is 1.6 years. -Children receive an average of 6 hours of one-on-one tutoring per week. Tennis: While tennis is not traditionally played by underserved youth, EPATT uses tennis to re-enforce life lessons. Through sport one learns discipline, self-reliance, sportsmanship and gains healthy habits through regular exercise. -116 children play tennis for a minimum of 2 hours per week. -Another 100 children are involved in EPATT tennis clinics in the EPA community. -18 children are members of the EPATT tournament team and receive an additional 3.5 hours of tennis per week. -EPATT players have been ranked by the United States Tennis Association (USTA). -Our young children participate in the 10 and Under Tennis protocol established by the USTA and have the opportunity to be part of local play days and events. Enrichment/Parent: An increasingly important goal has been to change students’ reference points in life. EPATT provides enriching experiences and college tours that help make education relevant and change the mindsets of our students by exposing them to the world around them. EPATT does this through quarterly field trips, guest speakers, and community service projects. EPATT also believes that in order to successfully impact children we must have a working relationship with their families. Families attend group parent meetings, parent workshops, one-on-one meetings with the staff and provide all academic information for their child to the program. Families are required to attend quarterly workshops.
