Mission Statement

The Locus Science Fiction Foundation (LSFF) is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to the promotion and preservation of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Its central activity is the publication of Locus magazine – “the guide to the world’s imagination” – and the administration of the Locus Awards.

About This Cause

“Locus Magazine is the home-town newspaper for the science fiction community” – award-winning author and climate futurist Kim Stanley Robinson Launched in 1968, Locus is science fiction's "paper of record." The magazine is helmed by a dedicated crew of editors and writers who adore all things science fiction, fantasy, and horror. We publish book reviews, author interviews, trade news, artist spotlights, new books release info, and more, of everything happening in the field. Our aim has always been to bring the community together by covering the genres as widely as we can. Our website, Locus Online (est. 1997), adds to this mix by also hosting author blog tours and a set of reference indexes and databases: resources that are used by librarians, bookbuyers, readers, scholars, publishers, collectors, researchers, and fans. As long standing editors and writers of genre fiction, we love telling the storytellers’ stories. The reciprocity of our community's support and good faith is best evidenced by our awards. We have won the Best Fanzine Hugo eight times and the Best Semiprozine Hugo 22 times, for an astonishing total of 30 Hugos, which we proudly display in our office space in Oakland. “The Locus Awards matter” – Neil Gaiman, bestselling creator, named one of the top ten living post-modern authors, and Locus board member You may also know us through our annual awards, the Locus Awards! The annual Locus Awards Weekend is a literary conference consisting of author readings, writing workshops, panels on literary and industry topics, and autographing sessions, and also hosts the Locus Awards ceremony. The Locus Awards Weekend serves as a lodestone event for a growing community of new and experienced writers, readers, fans, artists, publishing professionals, and other genre supporters. Locus is dedicated to serving a diverse community of authors, publishers, readers, and fans. It seeks to encourage honest communication about the writing industry between newcomers and established authors alike, and to promote transparency and trust within an increasingly diverse and thriving community. These community bulwarks are reflected in the Locus Awards themselves, established in 1971. Unlike most other awards in the field, the Locus Awards has an open public voting system and allows write-in ballots. This open voting process deliberately strengthens a democratic and civic celebration of the field’s creators and supporters. The Locus Awards are also proud to hold an award specifically for debut authors, in keeping with our mission to support new writers in the field. Finally, we confer an annual award for community development, historically given to organizations and persons who boost and platform marginalized voices.
