Mission Statement
The mission of Friends of Down Syndrome is to create lifelong learning opportunities for teens and adults through education, community outreach, and socialization. Friends of Down Syndrome envisions a world in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to continue their education while enhancing their quality of life as valued members of their community through their contributions.
About This Cause
Following the pandemic, Friends of Down Syndrome reopened with an enrollment of over 50 full-time individuals and staff for each classroom. In 2022 the program relocated to their forever home in Northwest Houston. This was accomplished through the generous donations of many private and professional entities along with corporate sponsorships from ExxonMobil, McDonald's, Shell, State Farm Insurance, Center Point Energy, North Houston Pole Line Company, Phillips 66, General Electric, as well as many other organizations. To meet the needs of the individuals attending, Friends of Down Syndrome Academy offers: •Weekly classes on Reading, Math, Art, Social Skills/Vocational, Health, and Music so that each individual receives a personalized educational experience. •Weekly life skills training; cooking, baking, using tools, assembly of various items, and household chores. •Opportunities to serve in the community under the supervision and guidance of work coaches. As successful as Friends of Down Syndrome has been, there is still a very long way to go to meet the needs of this community. It is estimated that there are as many as 8,000 individuals in the Houston Area with Down Syndrome whose needs are waiting to be met. Every person serving these students is a volunteer, except the teachers. Every dollar donated goes directly to the organization's daily operations. Friends of Down Syndrome will continue to utilize individual and corporate donations to maintain its work in the community. State reimbursements alone do not cover the total costs of providing all the organization offers. In the future, Friends of Down Syndrome seeks to provide housing for individuals who attend and update current facilities to expand their vocational programs. These changes will require more staff and additional renovations. Friends of Down Syndrome will continue to work toward these plans to support the dramatically underfunded Down Syndrome community in Houston. Your donation of time, talents, and treasure ensures hope for a future with a strong foundation. www.friendsofdownsyndrome.org 8425 West Rd. Houston, TX. 281-272-5305
