Mission Statement
At Northwest Mothers Milk Bank we work to improve the health and survival of the Pacific Northwest's most vulnerable babies. We carry out our mission through the safe collection and distribution of human donor milk, education, advocacy, and research.
About This Cause
We believe every baby deserves access to human milk. Our vision is a Northwest where every baby has access to the human breastmilk they need. Breastmilk (including donor milk) increases the health and survival of babies. Research shows that breastmilk shortens hospital stays for premature, ill, and vulnerable infants. It can prevent serious complications. When a mother's own milk is not available, donor milk plays a vital role. One in eight infants is born prematurely in the United States. Many of these babies spend time in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). Donor breastmilk can be lifesaving for hospitalized babies. We dispense some donor milk for babies who have been discharged from the hospital. These babies have a continued need for human milk for their recovery. We obtain a physician's prescription for All donor milk dispensed from the milk bank. Currently, most medical insurance in the Pacific NW does not cover donor milk. We continue advocacy work to make that coverage a reality. Until then, we work hard to ensure access to donor milk for vulnerable babies that need it. Sometimes parents need help paying for processing fees or shipping costs. We support them through Evie’s Fund, our Community Care program. NWMMB is a member milk bank of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). We adhere to the HMBANA standards and guidelines for donor milk banking. Pasteurization eliminates any bacteria or other infecting organisms possibly present in human milk. This destroys a small percentage of nutritional and immunological properties. But pasteurized milk retains many of its beneficial properties. It contains tremendous special properties that commercial milk formulas cannot duplicate. Our milk donors are healthy, non-smoking. They must be willing to undergo a thorough screening process. This includes a no-cost blood test. Thank you for your donation and joining in our efforts to save babies drop by drop!
