Mission Statement

Fight the New Drug exists to provide individuals the opportunity to make an informed decision regarding pornography by raising awareness on its harmful effects using science, facts, and personal accounts.

About This Cause

Youth are spending more time online than ever before. According to a survey by Common Sense, on average, 8-12-year-olds spend 5 and a half hours online a day, and 13-18-year-olds spend almost 9 hours daily. That's more than half of their waking hours. Unfortunately, many of those minutes include viewing porn. According to SimilarWeb's July 2022 traffic report, the three top-ranking porn sites generate more traffic annually than Amazon, Netflix, and TikTok combined. Time spent online continually increases while the age of online visitors gets progressively younger, and those same trends are just as apparent with porn. In fact, a nationally representative survey of U.S. teens shows 84% of males and 57% of females ages 14-18 have viewed or consumed pornography (Solano, Eaton, & O'Leary, 2020), and most teens are exposed to porn by the age of 13, with many of them exposed as young as 8 or 9 years old (Wright, Paul, & Herbenick, 2021). These statistics are especially concerning considering decades of research from respected academic institutions demonstrate significant impacts of porn consumption on individuals' mental health, self-esteem, emotional well-being, relationships, and society (Truth About Porn, 2023) and that the mainstream porn industry exploits and profits from sexual exploitation, perpetuating harmful gender stereotypes, normalizing sexual violence and abuse, and a host of other issues (FTND, Stop, 2023). Individuals, parents, families, communities, and society are experiencing the detrimental effects of pornography unlike ever before. To combat this issue and lack of education, Fight the New Drug (FTND) was founded in Salt Lake City in 2009 by four college students who began questioning the normalization of pornography in society after seeing it impact their lives and the lives of those around them. They quickly learned there was an abundance of research and personal accounts demonstrating the negative impacts of pornography consumption for individuals, relationships, and society. In response, FTND’s co-founders began an educational, grassroots campaign to provide people with the opportunity to make an informed decision regarding pornography. That campaign has grown into a movement creating positive change as millions worldwide utilize and share FTND’s resources and programs—but there is still work to be done. Due to the advent of the internet and the ubiquity of the smartphone, pornography is more accessible, affordable, and anonymous than ever before. By curating a variety of engaging, age-appropriate, and research-based resources, Fight the New Drug helps youth and adults consider before consuming pornography. Through the following programs, FTND’s areas of impact are widespread covering education, awareness, health, and the strengthening of relationships and communities. Education Program Through creative and engaging educational experiences, this program provides opportunities for individuals to make an informed decision regarding pornography. FTND illustrates the harmful effects of pornography and its links to all forms of sexual exploitation through a Live Presentation Program, a youthful documentary series, awareness-raising articles and videos, an interactive research database, and other compelling resources. Since FTND’s Live Presentation Program started in 2011, it has reached over a million people through youth, adult, keynote, and community presentations with a significant number of presentations hosted in Utah. Additionally, since FTND’s three-part documentary called “Brain, Heart, World” was released in late 2018, it has spread awareness at 500+ public screening events, and 110,000+ individuals have created accounts to watch in their homes. FTND continually optimizes resources in the Education Program to ensure they are easily accessible and remain powerful tools for individuals, families, educators, and community leaders. Mobilization Program This program’s resources transform followers and passive observers, empowering them to create social change around the issues of pornography and sexual exploitation. FTND mobilizes this movement through social media advocacy, the “Consider Before Consuming” podcast, an extensive website article library, conversation-starting apparel, and other engaging resources. With a continually growing presence, FTND currently has nearly 6 million Facebook followers, 317,000+ Instagram followers, 56,500+ Twitter followers, 12 million+ TikTok views, and 152,000+ YouTube subscribers. Additionally, FTND’s podcast has over one million listens. FTND has had over 72 million website sessions from individuals across the globe seeking information on pornography’s harms and resources like FTND’s interactive conversation guide designed to help foster healthy discussions about porn. In a 2022 national survey gauging the public’s understanding of porn’s harms, respondents answered research-based questions about porn consumption risks—only 10% received a passing score of 70% or higher while respondents who had previously engaged with Fight the New Drug’s content and resources scored remarkably higher than those who had not—with an average score of 86% on the research-based survey. This survey shows the significant impact shared content can have. Additionally, the growth across FTND’s digital channels provides evidence that this movement, fighting for real love and against exploitation, is growing at a rapid pace. Pornography’s harmful effects do not discriminate, and neither does Fight the New Drug. FTND continually provides a safe and shame-free place for those seeking information to consider the harmful effects of pornography. As more individuals continue making educated decisions to live porn-free lives, decades of research and thousands of personal accounts speak to the positive impact that can have on individual health and wellness, ultimately resulting in positive changes in communities and society at large.
