Mission Statement
Through community education, accessible and affordable midwifery care, compassion, and promoting family wellness, Olive Tree Projects reduces preventable maternal and infant mortality while also improving the health and well-being of Haitian women and children
About This Cause
Olive Tree Projects was created to help children in Haiti. We believe that the best way to achieve this goal is through 'family preservation' efforts - a term that has stemmed from a movement to keep children out of institutions and in a family unit. Our goal is to prevent the need for orphanages and keep children in a family. Maternal mortality, unwanted children, and poverty are all reasons why children end up in orphanages. We work towards preventing these issues through 4 different avenues: - Midwifery Centre: Midwifery has been recognized by UNICEF as a practice that will improve maternal health. We provide a safe, clean place for labour and delivery, as well as offer prenatal, delivery, and post delivery care. Through weekly education classes and providing holistic care, we aim to empower mothers with knowledge and skills that will give them the confidence to care for their children. We also provide family planning services and have started a breastfeeding education program in the community. - Foster Care Program: OTP provides monthly stipends and support to families caring for children who would otherwise be placed in an orphanage. - Scholarship Program: A major reason that parents decide to relinquish their children to an orphanage is because they are unable to pay for them to go to school. In response, OTP provides scholarships for children who live in unstable homes and are considered to be at-risk of being 'orphaned'. - Recycling Depot: 80% of children living in orphanages have at least one living parent. Often these parents love, and want, their child, but chose to surrender their children to orphanages because they are not economically able to care for their child. Providing employment helps keep children with their families. Olive Tree Projects currently subsidizes a bottle depot, which provides income opportunities and decreases the pollution in the city.
