Mission Statement
Creating Livelihood Opportunities for Refugees through Farming and Textiles
About This Cause
Multicultural Refugee Coalition, DBA the Refugee Collective, operates two nonprofit social enterprises in sewing and farming to create livelihood opportunities for refugees. Through textile manufacturing, regenerative farming, food access, English classes and professional development, the Refugee Collective helps refugees achieve upward economic mobility. The Refugee Collective’s 20 acre USDA-Certified Organic Farm in Elgin, TX, reconnects refugees from traditional farming cultures to land in their new communities. Refugee farmers learn production scale regenerative farming methods that are codified in our Resilient Farm Plan, the first of its kind in Texas. Farmers earn a fair wage by contributing to several collective farm projects. The primary farm team grows fresh produce that is distributed through a weekly Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, as well as to restaurants and wholesalers. The farm has recently started collecting food scraps from local restaurants, diverting food waste from landfills, and providing needed compost for the gardens. The Refugee Collective Studio creates dignified, fair-wage employment for refugee women in Austin, TX. We offer socially and environmentally conscious brands the opportunity to make our studio part of their story. The studio participates in sustainable practices, such as upcycling remnant fabrics, natural dyeing, and sourcing local fiber from our Texas farming community. Collaborating between the studio and farm, a natural dye garden and lab are housed at the farm. Collected food waste donated by local restaurant partnerships, as well as vegetable waste (such as carrot tops), are also used to dye fabric.
