Mission Statement
The West End House Girls Camp, Inc. (WEHGC) is an independent 501c3 organization committed to providing programs and services to girls between the ages of 7 and 17 most from families living at or below the U.S. Census Bureau’s measure of poverty. The mission of WEHGC is to positively influence the lives of a diverse community of girls by providing them with the skills, support, and opportunities needed to grow into healthy, productive, and responsible women. Multifaceted programming is centered on healthy living and fitness, character building and life-skills, girl’s empowerment and leadership, community service and responsibility, and team/community building.
About This Cause
The WEHGC is a residential summer camp experience that provides an environment safe from the pressures of the city. Campers learn and sharpen a variety of skills, gain self-confidence through a combination of traditional camp activities, empowerment programs, daily physical exercise, healthy eating, focus groups on relevant issues (managing relationships, prejudice, bullying, anger management, etc.), and community focused programs. The WEHGC is committed to providing every girl with the opportunity to attend overnight camp, regardless of family income levels. Nearly all girls come from families for which the cost of an overnight camp is prohibitive – the American Camp Association estimates that the average cost for two weeks at an overnight camp in New England is $3,000. The West End House Girls Camp provides at-risk girls with an opportunity they would not have otherwise. WEHGC serves girls between the ages of 7 and 17, with nearly all girls coming from families living at or below the U.S. Census Bureau’s measure of poverty. In 2017, WEHGC will serve up to 192 girls at overnight camp in Parsonsfield, Maine. Empowerment and outdoor introduction are two of WEHGC’s key education and programming components. Everyday girls engage in innovative physical activities designed to educate and introduce campers to a wide variety of options for personal health development. Activities include Red Cross swimming lessons and waterfront safety, field sports, archery, kayaking, fishing, tubing, paddle boarding, and camping. WEHGC operates two-week overnight sessions at the facility in Parsonsfield, Maine. Each two-week session is structured according to age and accommodates up to 48 girls each session – over the course of a summer, WEHGC can serve 192 girls in seven weeks of structured overnight summer programming. WEHGC provides round-trip transportation to and from Boston to the Camp in Parsonsfield, Maine. WEHGC facility includes an active waterfront, 4 bunk houses, craft/education center, recreation center, ropes course, soccer field, archery field, industrial kitchen and infirmary all staffed by highly qualified individuals committed to supporting the girls. The West End House Girls Camp believes that all young women have the potential, passion, and courage to strive for successful futures. Not all young women have the chance to see those qualities in themselves or the opportunities to gain social, educational, and life skills needed to realize that future. Our goal at the West End House Girls Camp is to provide those opportunities through innovative and focused programming as well as a supportive community, so that all of our girls will come to know their strength and become responsible and capable citizens.
