About This Cause
The Anika Foundation was established is 2009 to stand in the gap of socio-economic disparities. We apply a holistic approach to serving the whole person through 3 core impact areas: health equity, economic empowerment and civic engagement. We provide tools, workshops, technical support and soft skills development around financial literacy, with pathways to homeownership, business development and wealth creation. Women Empowered is our signature financial wellness initiative geared towards Women. Summer of 2019, will see the launch of Men Empowered-similar format-featuring men of color who are subject matter experts in home buying, business development, investments, parenting and restorative justice. We also engage youth through social enterprise, workforce development and social justice programming. Our civic engagement pathways promote increased participation through non-partisan issue advocacy and leadership development. Our goals are to demystify processes, remove barriers and expand access. To date, we have partnered with municipal health departments, school districts and community service organizations to deliver impactful programs. We have engaged over 1,500 scholars through our career pathway and social enterprise programs, with several scholars securing lucrative careers in the trades, and/or pursuing college and university. We've helped dozens of adult learners launch successful social enterprises. We've engaged over 1,500 people in homeownership, business development and real estate investment as long-term savings strategies. We've partnered with the University of Minnesota to design and implement intervention programs to check breast cancer, heart disease and colorectal cancers in the African American community. We've engaged over 40,000 community members through our health resource guide and healthy living program, Quality Life MN. Our non-partisan civic engagement efforts involves grassroots voter education in shelters, underrepresented communities and schools. We work with local and state government to increase ballot access and expand voter resources. Our current initiatives includes Census 2020 engagement to increase census participation in historically undercounted communities. We are working closely with Minnesota's State Demographer to ensure equitable outreach and engagement statewide. Our 2020 plan includes a goal to launch a vocational academy to deliver quality accelerated trades programs to the inner city. Career tracks in cosmetology/barbering, IT, Communications, videography & photography, sewing & design, airline and travel industry fields, and project management, to start. Additional tracks in food and agriculture, manufacturing and others to come. There is a strong demand for these careers in our communities and a need to connect youth-while in high school-to keep them engaged and connected to a career pathway. We are excited for the future! Our community welcomes our efforts and we continue to attract great partners who embrace our unique approach to creating solutions. Our work is centered in PEOPLE. We believe in our community's ability to create their own solutions. Lack of access to resources is often confused with lack of desire or motivation. Some of the best ideas, the greatest minds, talent and innovators have emerged from so-called 'underrepresented' communities. Our goal is to create safe spaces and support, and expand ACCESS for them to thrive.
