HIP offers cooking/nutrition education classes and food justice workshops to build community power. Beyond these major program areas, HIP is actively engaged with local, statewide, and national coalitions of food justice organizations to advocate for policy-level changes to address hunger.

About This Cause

Hunger Intervention Program (HIP) has been addressing hunger in North King County since 1998. HIP uses a holistic model to alleviate food insecurity today and to address the root causes of hunger for the future. HIP's work rests on three pillars: 1) Direct food support in the form of nutritious meals to people in need now; 2) Cooking and nutrition education classes to help create longer-term behavioral change towards better health and wellbeing; and 3) Food justice workshops and legislative advocacy to push for policy changes to address the root causes of hunger in the long-term. All of HIP's programs are designed with an equity lens to reduce barriers for people who have historically been underserved. HIP works to ensure that its programs are located where those most in need live or work. HIP translates outreach materials into different languages to ensure non-English speaking populations are aware of our programs. HIP strives to create an inclusive space to draw people to our programs where everyone feels welcome and valued. HIP actively partners with local human service providers, community leaders, and community-based organizations, including specialized organizations that serve refugee and immigrant communities. HIP also adapts meals to meet the cultural and dietary needs of the diverse populations it serves.
