Mission Statement

Peace Winds helps people around the world whose lives have been upended by disasters, conflict, and other humanitarian crises. With sister organizations in the US, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, we provide live-saving disaster relief, support refugees and displaced people, and help vulnerable communities build more secure, sustainable, and just futures for themselves after war, conflict, and other crises.

About This Cause

Peace Winds operates in 30+ countries, providing emergency relief to disaster survivors, humanitarian assistance for refugees, and community-building support for the world's most vulnerable people. Peace Winds America is part of an Asia-Pacific alliance and runs programs jointly with its sister organizations in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. We specialize in disaster relief and recovery. First established in Japan, Peace Winds Japan is considered one of Asia's most capable disaster responders. It hosts the ARROWS disaster medical team--with 20 full-time doctors, nurses, and logisticians--that dispatches on several hours' notice to disasters in Japan and internationally, often utilizing Peace Winds' small fleet of helicopters and ships. When the "rescue phase" of disasters ends, they hand off to Peace Winds responders who are experts on relief and long-term recovery--managing evacuation centers; distributing food, clean water, and supplies; organizing psychosocial support programs; and coordinating with local governments to conduct a range of community rebuilding initiatives. We also provide humanitarian assistance worldwide to refugees, internally displaced people, and communities devastated by conflict and disasters. We have a long history of working with Burmese, Sudanese, Syrian, and Congolese refugees, teaming up with UN agencies to run large-scale programs in refugee camps and to provide live-saving aid in dangerous and hard-to-reach areas. Peace Winds has run large-scale programs in places such as Gaza, Haiti, Iraq, Kenya, Myanmar, Mozambique, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Uganda, and Ukraine -- aiding some 30 million women, men, and children at the most difficult times of their lives. Peace Winds is particularly well known for providing clean and safe water systems, wide-ranging sanitation and hygiene initiatives, innovative vocational training, and grassroots community-building programs for refugees, internally displaced people, and impoverished communities. Depending on immediate needs, we also provide critical food assistance, health care, women's empowerment projects, shelter/housing, disability access programming and other forms of support in a holistic manner. Peace Winds America also supports Peace Winds Japan's domestic initiatives, which include the establishment and management of Japan's first system of no-kill shelters for both dogs ("Peace Wanko" initiative) and cats ("Peace Nyanko"). Founded in 2008, Peace Winds America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with offices in Washington DC. Peace Winds Japan and Peace Winds Korea are registered as nonprofit organizations in their respective countries as well.
