Mission Statement

Peace Winds is a 501(c)3 registered non-profit. Peace Winds America envisions a world where natural disasters pose a minimal threat to the safety, security and livelihood of people living in the Asia Pacific. Our core belief is that disaster response begins with preparedness, and that both disaster preparedness and response should integrate the efforts of governments, military branches, NGOs and the private sector.

About This Cause

Peace Winds America (PWA), is a 501(c)(3) organization based in Seattle and operating internationally. Since 2008, PWA has focused on strengthening preparedness and response to natural disasters in the Asia Pacific, with relief and recovery efforts in Japan, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, West Bank, Ukraine, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. PWA has established itself as one of the few international NGOs with expertise in Japan- and United States-led disaster preparedness and response. We bring together governments, militaries, NGOs, and the private sector to prepare for and respond to natural disasters with a “whole of society” approach. Part of this collaboration involves numerous preparedness programs in Japan, the U.S., Korea, and the Philippines. Those programs have resulted in legislative and procedural changes, improved networking and connectivity among responders, and publications and guides. Peace Winds America is supported by an outstanding board of directors, chaired by Lieutenant General Thomas Conant USMC, Ret. Made up of individuals from the political, academic, military, NGO, and business communities in the United States and Japan, PWA is a catalyst for combining these sectors into a well-coordinated team that is up to the challenges posed by the disaster-prone Pacific “Ring of Fire.” Peace Winds America was founded in 2008 by Dr. Charles Aanenson, who brings over 35 years of experience in the field of international aid and development, including leadership positions with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ford Foundation.
