About This Cause
Freewheelin’ Community Bikes (FCB) is a youth development organization that uses bicycles as the conduit for mentoring disadvantaged and underserved youth ages 10-18. FCB is a 501 c(3) charitable organization that provides year-round youth programming teaching bicycle mechanics, safe riding practices, and life and leadership skills through our signature Earn-A-Bike (EAB) program. The introductory EAB program provides one-on-one adult mentorship in learning the fundamentals of bicycle mechanics. When a student demonstrates proficiency in these mechanic basics, he or she can choose, restore and take home—earn--a bicycle from our donated stock. In addition, our youth earn a helmet and lock for their bicycle. Our advanced EAB students graduate from our program with marketable and portable job skills in bicycle mechanic knowledge. FCB is currently the only organization in Central Indiana that offers hands-on education and leadership development to youth via bicycles. Since 2007, FCB has served over 700 youth in through our EAB program. The EAB program helps develop a youth’s sense of accomplishment, confidence in working through difficult problems, character and pride of ownership. FCB also offers a community riding program. Open to individuals of all ages, skill-level and ability, Freewheelin’ Community Rides promotes bicycling as an alternative form of transportation in our community, while also emphasizing the enjoyment and health benefits of cycling. FCB’s Earn-A-Bike and Riding programs are partially funded by our full-service retail bicycle store, where we accept donations of used bicycles, parts and accessories that are then refurbished by our EAB students and by our volunteer mechanics and then re-sold to the public at affordable prices. Freewheelin’ Community Bikes is a social enterprise, with one ambitious goal: Building up our youth, growing our community, one bike at a time. Freewheelin’ Community Bikes believes in the worth and gifts of each person to enrich the world by using bicycles to bring out the best in people and in our community.
