About This Cause

About RAGE: RAGE was founded in 1994 in the early years of the FRC program. While originally based in East Hartford, the team has always included students from area towns that couldn’t necessarily support their own full team. In September 2013, we relocated to Tolland High School, but still include members from numerous surrounding towns. Today, the team consists of 30 high school students from Tolland, Ellington and Somers; eighteen technical mentors from Pratt & Whitney, UTC, UConn, Triumph and other companies; alumni; and other volunteers. RAGE is part of a larger organization called FIRST. The mission of FIRST is to inspire young people to be leaders in science and technology by engaging them in mentor-based programs that build science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills, while also building self-esteem, life skills, and community awareness. Through the program, students are able to: • Apply engineering principles to the design, build, and operation of robots for competitions • Learn and use CAD and other engineering software • Gain hands-on experience with multidisciplinary collaborative problem solving • Program robots for both autonomous and human-operated modes • Travel to competitions • Volunteer in their community • Network with industry and engineering firms and companies About FIRST: FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an organization founded by inventor Dean Kamen in order to get students involved in science, technology, and engineering. It hosts the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), in which our team competes. FRC is the only competition that places high school students side-by-side with industry professionals to work toward a common goal. This unique interaction aids students in developing a wide variety of technical and nontechnical skills. We aim to expose students to opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) through participation in this competition, and inspire them to pursue these opportunities in later life. Another key part of FIRST is Gracious Professionalism. This term was coined by Woodie Flowers (MIT professor and cofounder of FIRST), and it means that fierce competition and mutual gain can indeed coexist. It's the practice of encouraging professional work, mutual respect, and outreach. The Chairman's Award, the most prestigious award in FIRST, is awarded every year to the team which best exemplifies these qualities and pursues FIRST's mission. In the first year of FRC, 1992, there were 28 teams in a New Hampshire high school gym. FIRST has grown since then; now FRC has over 2900 teams and about 73,000 student members. FIRST has also added three other programs: Junior FIRST LEGO League, FIRST LEGO League, and FIRST Tech Challenge, targeting all students in kindergarten up through high school. The LEGO Leagues are entry-level programs, aimed at kids in grades K–3 and 4–8. FIRST Tech Challenge is like FRC, but on a smaller scale, to make entry into the program more affordable. FRC is FIRST’s spearhead program, and is intended for students in high school, grades 9–12. The build season begins the first Saturday of January and runs for just six short weeks into February. After that, the team will compete in two 2-day New England District events. The winners of the competition can ultimately advance to the FIRST World Championships in Detroit, Michigan.
