Mission Statement
FAIR FOOD NETWORK is a national nonprofit founded on the belief that vibrant local food systems can create health and economic opportunity for all. We pioneer win/win/win solutions that support farmers, strengthen local economies, and increase access to healthy food—especially in our most underserved communities. And we bring people together to generate ideas, share resources, and promote policy change.
About This Cause
Model Programs Our programs create on-the-ground impact, serve as replicable models, and spur public policy change. Key efforts include our work in healthy food incentives and fair food financing. Double Up Food Bucks: A proven model for healthy food incentives. This innovative program doubles the value of federal nutrition dollars spent at participating farmers markets and grocery stores, helping people bring home more locally grown fruits and vegetables. The wins are three-fold: low-income families eat more healthy food, local farmers gain new customers and make more money, and more food dollars stay in the local economy. Each has a ripple effect of benefits. Double Up is the first statewide incentive program to be rolled out with a uniform design, centralized administration, and local implementation. And we have helped spearhead technology innovations including new, scalable transaction systems at farmers markets and grocery stores. We have translated the program into a toolkit and are now working with partners from Arizona to Utah, Oklahoma to New York to bring the Double Up model to their communities. Informed by Double Up’s strong track record, the 2014 Farm Bill includes $100 million over five years to support the Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive grants program, a new national healthy produce effort. Double Up by the Numbers: • Grown from 5 farmers markets in Detroit to 150+ sites across Michigan and northern Ohio, including grocery. • 300,000+ low-income families have bought 4.4+ million pounds of healthy food with SNAP and Double Up since 2009. • 93% of Double Up shoppers report eating more fruits and vegetables, and 83% report buying fewer low-nutrition snacks. • 1,000+ farmers participate each year. 90% report selling more fruits and vegetables and 85% report increased income. • Since 2009, SNAP and Double Up have had a $7+ million impact on Michigan’s economy. • Michigan is now #3 in the nation in SNAP sales at farmers markets and is the leader in the Midwest. Fair Food Financing: Fueling the good food economy. The Fair Food Fund provides financing and business assistance to innovative good food enterprises that connect small and mid-size farms with consumers hungry for local, sustainably grown food. The Fund provides entrepreneurs with flexible, patient capital as well as business assistance to build a pipeline of investment-ready enterprises and provide a vehicle for funders looking to catalyze change in our food system. The Fund is initially focusing on the Northeastern United States. It has made great progress since its 2012 launch, raising more than $5 million in committed funds, financing select good food entrepreneurs, and providing business assistance to numerous organizations. Michigan Good Food Fund: Fair Food Network is a core partner in the Michigan Good Food Fund, a new public-private partnership loan and grant fund created to finance healthy food production, distribution, processing, and retail projects that benefit underserved communities throughout Michigan. Investing in these projects will increase access to healthy food, improve the health of children and families across Michigan, and spark economic development and job creation in the communities that need it the most. Additional core fund partners include the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Michigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems, and Capital Impact Partners. Growing the Good: Informing public policy. Fair Food Network is a partner to policymakers, philanthropic leaders, and advocates nationwide. We believe policy should be informed by what works in communities. We elevate innovations and insights from our work to inform key public policy conversations. We partner with stakeholders from across the food system and beyond to coordinate efforts. And we work with community leaders to elevate the real world issues they face, starting with healthy food access. Michigan: Our home and proving ground. Our home state is a proving ground for innovation and provides an opportunity to knit together our work for greater impact. We are especially committed to the city of Detroit, a place with great need and pioneering leadership in the good food movement. Efforts include: • Healthy Food Incentives. Double Up launched in Detroit and has become a statewide success story putting Michigan on the map as a national leader in the field. • Fair Food Financing. With our partners, our work with the Michigan Good Food Fund is growing Michigan’s good food future and helping transform more communities across the state into places of opportunity through healthy food financing. • Informing Public Policy. We engage on-the-ground leaders in Detroit and other communities across Michigan to inform conversations around key local, state, and federal food policy initiatives.
