Mission Statement

The Prometheum Foundation is a non-profit organization that encourages critical and analytical thinking, freedom of thought, and entrance into the “marketplace of ideas.” Unfortunately, discourse has become coarse. Today’s climate of social and political discussion is prohibitive, often degenerating into name calling. Instead of listening to the reasoning of the opposing view we accuse those who hold it of bad intentions. Apathy and a lack of knowledge often compound this issue. The Prometheum Foundation was created to change this dynamic. We bring civility into civil discourse. Disagreement should be welcomed, not discouraged; it is an important factor in our thinking process. It allows us to better form our views and opinions. Without it there is no marketplace of ideas. A representative democracy needs citizens who discuss and evaluate issues, who can communicate their views, hear opposing sides, respect the opinions of others, and vote with an educated opinion.

About This Cause

The Prometheum Foundation is a non-profit organization that encourages critical and analytical thinking, freedom of thought, and entrance into the “marketplace of ideas.” Democracy Demands Discussion, Discourse, and Debate. A simple premise and one clearly understood by the authors of the US Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. These two documents changed the world and are among the most important documents of governance ever written. Unfortunately, discourse has become coarse. Today’s climate of social and political discussion is prohibitive, often degenerating into name calling. Instead of listening to the reasoning of the opposing view we accuse those who hold it of bad intentions. Apathy and a lack of knowledge often compound this issue. The Prometheum Foundation was created to change this dynamic: We bring civility into civil discourse. We bring the ability to speak and listen openly. We bring information and awareness about current and past issues. We bring knowledge and understanding of important documents. With many accepting what they read and hear at face value, we teach people to question and analyze. We invite you to see how we accomplish this through our five targeted programs: Franklin Forum: Society is losing the ability to discuss difficult, controversial, or even simple issues, often not listening to the reasoning of the opposing view but instead accusing those who hold it of bad intentions. The climate of political discussion today is prohibitive, frequently degenerating into name calling. Discourse has become coarse. The Franklin Forum is a high school program that changes that dynamic. By placing students in the arena of public debate, they are obliged to think about issues and public policy, allowing them to test their opinions, hear opposing views, and debate current issues, all in a setting with a free and open exchange of ideas. The Forum teaches civility in civil discourse; the ability to disagree and still be agreeable even in a passionate exchange of views. Young people, especially from lower socio-economic levels and those with challenging family lives, often feel disconnected from society and detached from their community. The Franklin Forum gets students engaged in the world outside their circles and provides a significant link with the community and to adult role models outside the school. Students develop self-confidence, self-esteem, respect for the opinion of others and the ability to effectively communicate their views; all while gaining an appreciation of democratic principles and values. It develops better students who can express their ideas, and better citizens who are aware and more prepared to cast their vote because they have thought about what and for whom they are voting. Constitution Center: Many of us know very little about the US Constitution, and more importantly we do not understand it, or the principles it contains. Lacking this knowledge in a representative democracy, citizens can be exploited and manipulated to give up their rights and freedoms without realizing it. Without this knowledge we may vote for politicians or policies that may cause unwanted, even dangerous repercussions in the future. Schools do not take the time to fully teach about the Constitution, the US Declaration of Independence, or the men who wrote them. Students are taught about these documents as historical artifacts, rather than the revolutionary documents that changed the world…. and more importantly govern the world they live in today. We are in the process of creating an online portal of information with documents, videos, and scholarly explanation and analysis. In depth lesson plans and course outlines will be made available to educators, at different grade levels. A Video series is underway for teaching students as well as adults on Constitutional issues that affect their daily lives. A shorter YouTube video series called the Constitutional minute will introduce young people to key principles of the Constitution. These quick entertaining videos not only inform, but pique the viewers interest to learn more about the documents. Information Center: With an ever-changing world and our busy lifestyles, being well informed on current national and global issues is difficult. Due to the way news is presently being reported on television and the internet, finding unbiased, nonpartisan information is also a challenge. Advertisers and agendas seem to control our usual sources of news. This often leads us to read and watch news sources that agree with our personal opinions, not allowing us to hear the opposing sides or views, nor be challenged in our own. An informed public is essential for a healthy democracy; voters need educated opinions. We realize that people need to be well informed, and that they do not have a lot of time. The Information Center will produce concise, agenda free reports and videos that are edifying without leading one way or the other. These briefs will give the public unbiased, clear information so they can better understand the issues and better form their own opinions and views. The information center will also be an easily accessible hub for important documents, historical records, speeches, news clips, incidents, and raw footage of important events. Debate Center: Current debates between political candidates often do not allow a true comparison of ideas and views on important matters. Most public debates are merely interviews that lack real substance and give only a cursory view of the candidates. The Debate Center will train moderators to ask questions designed to draw out the true values and opinions of the candidates, and allow constituents to learn what those who seek to hold public office really think about governance and public policy. This Center will also inform the public by holding discussions and symposiums on important public issues. Health Project: Obesity, childhood diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and psychiatric problems are steadily increasing along with the rapid rise of health care costs. Good health comes from good nutrition! We all need to have a better understanding of what good nutrition really is, as it effects our bodies, brain function, mental clarity, cognitive ability, and mood. Many of us are misinformed and do not understand the consequences of the food choices that we make. We lack basic knowledge of what our bodies need and the addictive nature of some of the processed foods that we consume. This is especially true for those that are limited by their economic status. This situation is dangerous to our society, our health and wellbeing, and our economy. We are creating an outreach program starting at the school level to educate students and their families on nutrition, fitness, and healthy lifestyle choices. Our goal is to instill healthy eating and exercise habits that are easy to understand and follow. Our interactive Health Program will bring the most cutting edge information on health and exercise. An information hub will be available to help farmers protect the soil and grow more nutritious food, to help families plan meals and activities, to provide educators with lesson plans and teaching aids, and to help people find farmers markets and healthy activities in their local communities.
